The only difference is that in the poster at Bordeaux the elephant is returning after logistically carrying wine through various parts of the world but in the latest commissioned work, it brings the mahout with the elephant and two tasting glassesto Mumbai where the wine tasting is being held.
The elephant comes back from Bordeaux in the form of a poster for the SIWC to be organised in Mumbai on November 19-20. Jean- Pierre Got whose wine poster exhibition is being held from October 22 for a month at the newly opened Musée du vin et du négoce in Bordeaux, in all likelihood has been commissioned courtesy Stephen Spurrier who spent his younger years in Paris and Bordeaux as a wine merchant and is now Chairman of the Wine Society of India, which successfully sells wine on the business model of the international newspaper clubs and the wine societies abroad and is conducting the tastings with Sommelier India.
‘Will the Indian elephant come to India too? Perhaps, if someone could convince Got to get here with the exhibition-or if a winery, a wine show or a French exhibitor were to get the 500 posters made’ was the poser from delwine when an article was published last month about this vibrant painter and an artist, also a former wine merchant, in its volume no. 331 dated September 22.

On an invitation from delWine to bring the exhibition to India after it closes in China where it takes place after finishing in Bordeaux, he wrote back,’ I would like so much to come to India. One day- for sure!’ Perhaps, this poster may bring him to India with or without this exhibition, earlier than even he might have imagined!
‘Painted in the Belle Époque fashion, illustration was made to be very simple for an immediate understanding of what was going on-a wine tasting in India,’ he informs delWine, adding,’ On the poster, the inviting mahout and elephant joyfully celebrate their arrival in Mumbai before the competition.’
At delWine we have been watching Jean Paul’s works with interest for several years and find his penchant for wine related details commendable. For instance for Oak Tradition he shows a hand coming out from a hole through the top of an oak barrel, pouring wine into a glass held by the other hand coming out of the bottom hole-presumably indicating the winemaker wearing a shirt aging through oak before it reaches the sophisticate consumer, who is shown wearing a suit.
Jean-Pierre Got started designing posters in 1992 with his first commission from a Bordeaux wine negociant. Other commissions followed with requests for designs in the Belle Époque and Art Deco styles. He has also become quite popular in the USA where he is headed for Healdsburg in California where a half Marathon is being held on October 31st , the Halloween day.
Interestingly the poster reads- Wine Country Half marathon- Wine Served One wonders if the Airtel half Marathon being run in Delhi, the next day, on November 1, when the Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan will also run, will have the possibility of –Wine Served
At all!!!
