Dec 28: The annual Top 100 List announced today by Wine Spectator puts Sassicaia ($245) from Tenuta San Guido at the top, followed by Ch Canon La Gaffeliere St. Emilion ($84) and Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva ($35), with 9 wines costing over $100, thus inspiring Subhash Arora to select Top Ten wines from the list based generally on the basis of availability , with prices being an affordable under $50, thus offering value-for-money high quality wines for regular use by connoisseurs
Wine Spectator’s Top 100 is usually very much anticipated by the importers, restaurateurs and wine aficionados every year since they started it in 1988. Realising that most people cannot afford the top wines as they are much too expensive, the editors decided to survey the wines reviewed over the previous 12 months in any year. They based the Top 100 on various criteria that included quality (ratings), value, availability and excitement (the oomph factor). This annual list recognised successful wineries, regions and vintages around the world rough this list.
Since the debut in 1988 new regions, grapes and styles have appeared on the list, but the classics are still going strong. This year the List ranks Sassicaia on Top. It also indicates the dichotomy in the point rating system. Would you prefer a wine with 98 points over the one with 97 points. What if the 98 pointer is 10 times more expensive than the 97 pointer as you would find many such cases in the List.
However, this is not the subject of discussion of the Article. But we have tried to select wines that .)are under $50 (affordable for high quality wines in India). We also tried to select wines that are imported in India or the importer is importing similar wines. Thus, we created our own Top Ten List as follows, without affecting the ranking. The only additional factor considered has been that they are generally available (but not all-but were too tempting not to include in our List) in India or an importer could get interested and we have tasted them and like the flavours too.
