Insipid Performance by Indian Wines at Decanter World Wine Awards

May 26: Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) announced the results of its 2017 edition of Awards in which 17,200 entries were submitted, with only 2 Indian wines-both from Fratelli Vineyards meriting only a Commendation each, though interestingly both the winners were white and Chenin, Blanc, writes Subhash Arora

Not to talk of Platinum Best in Show trophy in any of the 34 categories, Indian wines did not even manage a Gold Medal that has been eluding them ever since they started taking part in the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA). Even a Silver Medal which was the Highlight of the results in 2011 when Sula won this medal in 2011 for Sauvignon Blanc 2010, was last awarded to KRSMA Sauvignon Blanc 2014 in 2015,

Scoring 85 points out of a possible 100, Fratelli Chenin Blanc 2016 and Classic Chenin 2016 were both awarded the Commendation, the lowest recognition in the hierarchy of Medals – Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Commendation, indicating that Indian Chenin Blancs appealed somewhat to the jury.

Last year in 2016, a British wine marketing company Soul Tree owned by two Indians living in UK, managed a Silver Medal for Sauvignon Blanc 2015 scoring 90 points.. This wine was produced by an Indian winery near Nashik. Grover Zampa had won 2 Commendations for their Vijay Amritraj Reserve Collection Red 2013 (84 points) and Soiree Brut 2014 (83 points).

The best performance ever by the Indian wines had been in 2015 when Besides KRSMA winning the Silver, one Bronze and 3 Commendations were awarded to Grover Zampa of the Indian contingent. 2014 was the only other year when Jewels of Nashik Sauvignon Blanc 2013 won one Silver Medal. The wine was crafted for Marks and Spencer by Sula Vineyards.

Meanwhile, France had an excellent year at DWWA, winning 8 of the 34 Platinum Best in Show trophies that were given. These were 5 more than any other country. South America also had an excellent year, with three Platinum Best in Show awards for Argentina, one for Chile and two for Uruguay. There were also strong Platinum Best in Show wins for Australia, Spain and Italy, which all got three each.

DWWA has been one of the fastest growing wine competitions in the world, which started with barely 4,000 wines in 2004 and has now become world’s largest wine competition with over 17,200 entries this year. There were 219 judges including 65 MWs and 20 Master Sommeliers.
