Henschke Highlights at Singapore Wine Course

A wine educational programme organised by the Singapore Polytechnic in conjunction with Wine Resources, Wine for Asia and co-ordinated by Indian Wine Academy for Indian participants will see the likes of Stephen Henschke conduct a master class followed by a tasting of the legendry Hill of Grace 2004, reports Subhash Arora, President of the Academy.

The crash course titled 'The International Wine Importer Course 2008' is part of the several educational but affordable programmes offered by the Indian Wine Academy for its members subscribing to the complimentary eNewsletter- the first wine, food and hospitality centred online publication in the country providing valuable education to wine lovers without burning a hole in the pocket, rather than make them spend lakhs of rupees for some obscure courses overseas.

Who Should Attend

The course is focussed on wine importers, distributors, retailers, restaurateurs and F & B personnel, producers who are interested in exports of their wines and those individuals interested to strengthen the foundation of their wine knowledge. It is equally useful for those interested in pursuing any wine related activity in the near future including imports.

It will be held on 14 and 15 October at the Continuing Education Center of Singapore Polytechnic with the option of attending Wine for Asia where, besides tasting wines from several countries there will be an opportunity to learn about wines from  Austria, Argentina, Australia, California, Spain and Germany etc. You may also have 'An Intimate Affair with Italian Wines' on October 19.

The 6-day total programme will also enable you to learn about Wine and Health and if you are inclined towards investments in wine, this will offer you a possibility to attend a class on Wine and Investments.

Masterclass by Henschke and Hill of Grace Tasting

The 2-day formal course of 16 hours will be followed by a master class by Stephen Henschke, one of Australia's leading winemakers and owner of the legendary cult winery, Hill of Grace on October 16 afternoon. Not only will his viticulturist wife Prue, who won the 'Baron of Barossa Viticulturist of the Year Award' in 1997, present herself as a member of the faculty on October 15, but a tasting of their legendry Hill of Grace 2004 ( Retail price $550, if available) will also be the highlight of the programme.

The master class will be held on the afternoon of October 16 where the Hill will be tasted. It is usually almost impossible to find a place in this internationally acclaimed masterclass, but the International Wine Academy has reserved a few confirmed seats for those participating through delWine, empowering them to attend this fabulous presentation with tastings.

Course Module

Technical evaluation of Wine will start with a Taster test with a self test with which you can check your tasting capability as a normal or super taster. You will be trained in identifying faults with wines and learn about finding balance in wines.

A vision on Experience Design and knowledge of differentiating factors will enable people in the wine business to have a competitive edge over others.

Overview of regional wines and their Characteristics will focus on French, Australian, Italian, South African, Californian, Chilean and many other regions followed by tastings of select wines from a few of these countries.

The Wine Style roadmap- in order to help in the selection of wine, the participants will be shown how wines could be put into a white and red wine style matrix.

Influence of Terroir, Viticulture and Vinification- a class by the Henschkes will be surely an eye opener for some. They will also help you to 'Understand the Quality in Wines'. Many people purchase wines using benchmarks set by wine gurus. This session will share with you on how quality is being built and judged in wine so you may take your own decisions.

You will also be led through a tasting of Peter Lehmann's Eden Valley Riesling 2007 from Barossa, voted as Australian top 100 wines and the 95-pointer Henry's Seven 2006, a Shiraz Grenache and Viognier Rhone blend from Henshcke.

Of course, the course will have a wine market update on sales and marketing of wines, with production and consumption details with forecasts, for the statistics lovers. The details will include Asian wine market and wine marketing in Asia. The module on marketing will delve into various analyses and market segmentation strategies, pricing and promotions.

It will also touch on market dynamics and legislations that have an influence on wine sales in the Asian region.

Certification: Participants who attend the course will be awarded a certificate of attendance.

Course Fees

The cost of participation for the Indian delegates for the course is S$780 (+GST of $54.60, air-fare and taxes, visa charges etc. are extra).  For Indians who qualify for the course, a rebate of 50% will be given.
