KRSMA creates a Medallic History in Chinese Competition

KRSMA creates a Medallic History in Chinese Competition

Sep 12: The relatively unknown Karnataka winery Krsma Estate has created history of sorts by bagging a Double Gold for the Krsma Estate Chardonnay 2012 Double Gold, with Alpine and Four Seasons also adding to the medal tallies in the China Wine and Spirits Awards 2013 designed exclusively for wines desirous to enter the Chinese market.

Although the wines have not been seen much in the market so far-especially the Chardonnay varietal, it is by far the best medal standing by any Indian winery in an international competition so far. KRSMA also bagged a Gold for the Cabernet Sauvignon and Silver for the Sauvignon Blanc.

Four Seasons' Ritu Sauvignon Blanc 2012 has won a Gold medal while Ritu Shiraz 2012 and Ritu Chenin Blanc 2012 have been awarded a Bronze Medal each.

Another relatively new winery, Alpine that has come up with the enological support of the French international consultant Stephane Derenoncourt has also bagged Silver medals for their Vindiva Classic Sauvignon Blanc 2011, Vindiva Reserve Shiraz 2010 and Vindiva Classic Shiraz 2011.

The competition is different from other international competitions in that the 100 odd judges tasting the wines are mainly importers from Hong Kong and China, though sommeliers are also a part of the juries. The website also takes pride in the fact that the wines tasted are exclusively for the Chinese market, thus indicative that Krsma, Four Seasons and Alpine Wineries are targeting the difficult Chinese market.

Sula has already made efforts, done the home work and is sending the first shipment to China next week  for the launch of their wines in October. It would appear that Indian producers are heading towards China to grab a bit of the burgeoning Chinese market.

Surprisingly, the Award certificate does not specify vintages of the winning wines or the date of issue of the certificate. It bears the signature of Kelly England, President of CWSA only.

The list of Indian winners may be incomplete as the website does not appear to be very user-friendly with no categorization of awards by the country and class of medals, like most other international competitions of repute, to help easy indexing and reference.

delWine is an avid supporter of participation by the Indian producers in the international wine competitions, depending upon the markets they want to penetrate. It gives an independent and hopefully unbiased opinion of wine experts.

As promised by delWine, publishing the result of a competition in which an Indian wine wines a gold medal, we salute Krsma wines and hope that they will continue to win such medals in other recognised and respected international competitions where producers, sommeliers and journalists are judges.

Thanks to the efforts of Indian Wine Academy to promote Brand India, Four Seasons was invited to showcase their wines at the World Wine Symposium at Villa D'Este, Italy where 250 of the who’s who of the wine industry congregate every November. This year Krsma Estate wines will be available for tasting to this august gathering-editor

CWSA TEAM Says:

Congratulations on your success at the CWSA - the biggest and most prestigious wine and spirits competition in Hong Kong and China. We are pleased that India's wine industry is developing so very well. You are indeed correct about this certificate, and we invite you to now see the CWSA 2013 Results page and you will see the vintages have been included - as will be the official original certificates that are post mailed to all CWSA Winners. There was a short time technical hitch due to unprecedented traffic which is now restored. http://www.cwsa.org/cwsa-results-2013/ Thank you for your highlighting of this matter. CWSA wishes you great success in the fastest growing wine market in the world. Congratulations again, CWSA TEAM

Sneha Rao Says:

Dear Subhash, it is indeed a great moment for us to have won medals for our wines even before we launch them in the market. With passion and fervour, KRSMA wines have been created to place Indian wines in the global wine market, with focus on quality and true character representation of the terroir – Hampi Hills, the ideology shared by its promoters, Uma and Krishna Prasad. No effort has been spared in ensuring this and we will continue with the same zeal year on year and create world class wines. As we prepare to launch the wines in India, the award sets tone for greater appreciation of the product. Unlike other competitions, it did surprise me as well that no vintage was specified in the certificate, await feedback from the organisers on the same. Though the competition does exclusively cater to Chinese markets and tasted by importers/ exporters and those involved in the trade, it also throws light on consumer demographics and evolving palates. What the market has to offer, only time will tell.

While we soak and celebrate the success, we applaud Del Wine to be on the button and track Indian and global wine industry, keeping its readers abreast on wine news world over. Kudos!!Regards.Sneha Rao, Business Head KRSMA Estates Pvt Ltd
