Wine is Culture, says Italian President

President Giorgio Napolitano on Friday reportedly became the first Italian head of state to visit Vinitaly, the world's biggest international wine trade fair, now in its 44th year. Although the Show opened on 8th April, it was officially opened on April 9th when the President also visited several pavilions including those of Canada and Sicily.

During his tour of the Verona Trade Fair Complex, where the annual event is staged, Napolitano said "I did not like here to make speeches But to do a little tasting and bring you my best wishes."

"I also came to congratulated you all for the wealth and culture you have created here, because wine is culture,” he said while speaking at the Canada pavilion.

President Napolitano was received on arrival by the Agriculture Minister Luca Zaia, who is about to step down following his election as governor of the northeast region of Veneto. Verona Trade Fair president Ettore Riello, wine industrialist Gianni Zonin and local government officials were there to receive him.

Although this was the first time a President had visited the show, wine is considered as a part of culture and an extension of food for centuries whereas it is still considered an alcohol- like any other liquor in India. Serving of liquor, including wine is not allowed to be served at the residence of the President of India-including the State banquets. On the other hand, White House stocks and serves only American wines whereas the Queen’s cellar has an excellent collection which is maintained by a cellar master taken on special assignment from wine experts in public.
