The first-ever Wine On Earth Taste-A-Thon is being organized on Wednesday, June 17 by Wine Origin Alliance. It will be a day of virtual tastings hosted by some of the world's most renowned wine regions. It will feature tastings organized online by wine producers and trade associations from 16 wine regions representing eight countries- Australia, France, Japan, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, United States of America and Italy which will be represented by Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico.
“We are always proud to take part in one of the initiatives of the Wine Origins Alliance. The Alliance is of immeasurable value,” says Giovanni Manetti, Chairman of the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico, “because it involves some of the most prestigious winemaking regions in the world, working to guarantee mutual respect for safeguarding wine place names of origin. The fact that this sensitivity should originate from and be shared by prestigious international winemaking areas in the US and Australia, our leading markets, will certainly help us in our battle to safeguard the origins of our products in those countries which do not yet recognize the value and importance of the concept of place and origin.”
Virtual tastings will happen throughout the day on various platforms. ‘Chianti Classico will be hosting a virtual tasting of its three typologies, Chianti Classico annata, Chianti Classico Riserva and the top-ended Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, under the guidance of Valentino Tesi, winner of the Best Italian Sommelier competition in 2019. The tasting will be posted on the Chianti Classico Facebook and Instagram profile. Viewers can join in at any time, from any time zone, and from the comfort of their own home,’ says Silvia Fiorentini, Marketing and Communications Manager of the Consorzio.

Perhaps the most important ingredient in making wine is location. The land, air, water, weather where grapes are grown and the local wine makers make each wine unique, even if the grapes are the same. Passionate vintners and grape-growers like to display a wine’s true origin by clearly identifying on the label so that the consumer is adequately informed when purchasing and consuming wine. This also ensures protection of the sanctity of wine growing regions across the globe.
Wine Origins Alliance is a global collective Association in the wine industry that works to raise awareness about the importance of location to winemaking and the need to protect the integrity of wine region names around the world, since 2005. Thirty one members from eleven countries across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia are Barossa, Bordeaux, Bourgogne and Chablis, British Columbia, Champagne, Chianti Classico, Finger Lakes, Jerez, Livermore Valley, Long Island, McLaren Vale, Missouri, Monterey County, Napa Valley, Oregon, Paso Robles, Porto, Rhône Valley, Rioja, Santa Barbara County, Seneca Lake, Sonoma County, South Africa, Texas, Tokaj, Victoria, Walla Walla Valley, Washington state, Western Australia, Willamette Valley and Yamanashi. “For centuries, wine has brought people and nations together,” says Jennifer Hall, Director of the Wine Origins Alliance. “Now, even while we are social- distancing, wine still brings us together. After all, it’s always 5 o’clock somewhere!”
