April 10: The Biennial International Wine & Health Summit returns to the United States next month on May 4-7 at the UC Davis campus for a stimulating line-up of historic & late-breaking science on alcohol wine, and health and is so important for sharing the latest knowledge on wine and health that the medical students get credits for Continuing Medical Education, writes Subhash Arora who has attended a couple of them and found them extremely useful to understand the medical and health side of wine
The Summit
The International Wine & Health Summit will be held at the Conference Center on the campus of the University of California at Davis, Davis, California, the premier academic institution for Viticulture and Enology. The UC Davis campus offers the unique advantage to Summit delegates to explore the working laboratories and vineyards of the Robert Mondavi Center for Food & Wine Science, where winemakers, master-brewers, food specialists, and associated scientists of the future, are currently in training.
The Summit represents a partnership of the International Wine & Heart Health Summits sponsored by the Desert Heart Foundation and the Renaud Society, and WineHealth, an international association of research scientists in the field of wine, alcohol and health consequences.
The blending of the international research community along with a broad based clinical physicians and healthcare- providers and delegates from the wine industry and advocacy groups, makes this Summit a unique experience for those who share passion for wine, lifestyle, and health and an academic interest in the subject.
The Renaud Society, a society of medical professionals and advocates, with an interest in better health and a passion for wine, are sponsors of this Conference along with the Desert Heart Foundation Arizona and the Robert Mondavi Institute for Food & Wine Science at UC Davis.
Faculty and Speakers
The faculty for this program blends academicians, research scientists, clinical specialists, iconic industry personalities and thought leaders from across the world. They focus on the complicated topics around alcohol and health in general and wine in particular, besides looking at the human longevity.
Local wine producers of Northern California including Napa Valley, will welcome the Summit delegates making it possible to visit several wineries in the area as a delegate. One can count on a better understanding of wine and health; the latest Studies will be presented by the eminent speakers. It ought to sharpen your appreciation for wine in moderation for better health.

It includes one seat at the gala dinner reception, an Affair of the Heart. Details are at https://winesummit.org/ or Contact: info@desertheartfoundation.com for more details and Registration. This is an excellent opportunity for evolved wine lovers and certainly will take you to a higher level of understaning. I would recommend membership of The Renaud Society also for the serious connoisseurs. It was formed to honour Dr. Serge Renaud who is considered the Father of ‘The French Paradox’ and was a regular faculty and Speaker at the Conference- he passed away in October 2012.
‘A moderate and regular wine consumption of one to three drinks per day, which is common in France, protects us,’ he used to tell me. ‘Polyphenols, anthocyanins and tannins contained in the wine in the skin and seeds of grapes, have antioxidant properties. This thins the blood and prevents the arteries from clogging. Red wine is particularly affected by this phenomenon,’ he told delWine at one of the Health & Heart Summits attended by Subhash Arora during a conference he attended in Napa. He was the first to demonstrate scientifically and explain to the media that regular and moderate wine consumption was good for health. It was considered a revolutionary idea at that time in 1991. A spate of Studies followed to prove or disprove his theory but have kept up the buzz alive.
Serge Renaud was a patriarch of the International Wine & Heart Health Summit where I had met him at two conferences organised in Napa Valley. Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Goldfinger, a society was formed to honour him and named after him as the Renaud Society. ‘Serge was greatly proud of the Renaud Society, a society of medical professionals with an interest in health and a passion for wine. He referred to the society very often in his personal and professional circles. He is the patriarch of our society, and will always be so honored and remembered, ‘says Dr. Goldfinger.
