William Reed has been an established player in UK for organizing wine shows and events for decades. The well-known writer and author Robert Joseph had in fact founded the International Wine Challenge for a group magazine along with Charles Metcalfe in 1984 and it is one of the best recognized and respected international wine competitions. Robert is quite supportive of this concept. He says, ‘in case of food and wine shows in India, there may be more footfalls but the interest of the visitors is not necessarily in wines. In the Tasting Table format, the numbers may not be comparable but the quality of visitors is better from the standpoint of wines.’
The Indian partners have experience of several years organizing several trade shows including the IFE India which took place for 5-6 years and was one of the pioneers in the food and wine shows.
Apart from being a more focused event for the wine industry, it works out a cheaper alternative to a food and wine show where the costs are higher by 30% or more, says Mr. K V Rajeevan, the head for the event. Moreover, participants in the International Wine Challenge get a substantial discount for taking part at InterWine. The standard 1.83m long tasting table which allows up to 10 labels to be tasted, along with the accessories and wine services costs Rs. 80,000 plus taxes for two days while IWC participants pay a discounted rate of Rs.67,000 +taxes.
The World Trade Centre in Cuffe Parade is a well established center for buyer-seller meets, being centrally located.
Andrew Reed, Managing Director of the Events and Exhibitions of William Reed Business Media Ltd tells delWine, ‘We are delighted to be organising a specialised wine tasting in India for the first time. The International Wine Challenge is established as the benchmark throughout the world for quality wines and InterWine, the new specialist wine tasting event in Mumbai, places the focus upon India’s rapidly developing wine market. The Indian wine market is already proving itself to be a key new opportunity for producers and it promises a great deal for the future’.
Besides the tastings, there will also be an option for the participating companies to take part in seminars where they can showcase their products to a select group of visitors over two days. The visitors will include the sommeliers, F & B Managers from hotels and restaurants, Purchase Managers, importers, retailers, supermarket owners, trade commissioners from other countries, trade journalists, independent retailers and wine consultants. The event will be adequately promoted in various trade publications as well, says Rajeevan.
