Torres received the Green Awards instituted by the prestigious British magazine Drinks Business last year, as a reward for the world leadership in ethical environmental practices and as recognition for his career long promotion of sustainable and ethical practices in the world of wine and spirits
Vanya Cullen, owner winemaker of Cullen Wines in West Australia scooped the Green Personality of the Year prize. Family-run Australian winery De Bortoli picked up the Sustainability Award with Cono Sur Vineyards of Chile walking off with the Green Company of the Year Award. The UK supermarket Sainsbury’s received the Green Retailer of the Year Award.
Bodegas Torres had received the Green Company of the Year Award 2010 for its commitment to eco-sustainability. Since it was founded, Torres has been concerned about the environment, employing ecological practices in its wine production. In 2009, the publication also drew up a “Green List”, in which Torres appeared as the First Winery minimizing environmental impact. Every bottle of the wine displays this green award, confirms Sumit Sehgal, National Head of Marketing for Prestige Wines, the Thapar-Torres JV, importing their wines from Spain, Chile and the USA into India.
Since generations the Torres family, devoted to vine-growing and wine culture, claims to have respected nature as one of its main priorities. They have adopted many practices for a balanced viticulture. All waste water is purified and the bodegas participate actively in the conservation and replanting of regional forests as well as in the preservation of the birds Bonelli’s Eagle in Spain and the Andean Condor in Chile.
To lessen the negative impact of climate change, they are investing in renewable energies by deploying solar panels and wind parks, hybrid cars used for sales throughout Spain, use of electric cars for Barcelona and Madrid, and are also studying exploitation of vineyard and forest biomass. Miguel Torres whom delWine tried to contact and congratulate is presently in Chile and travelling to Vancouver tonight and could not be reached. But in a message sent through their Brand Ambassador in Mumbai, Marc Perello, he says he was extremely happy with the recognition and that more and more people in the wine world are recognizing the need for the Green winemaking practices which Torres has been adopting for several years. "The more we care for the earth, the better our wine", is his philosophy. ‘One of our great concerns is the impact the climate change will have on our vineyards and we are always focusing on this aspect of viticulture,’ he says, adding, “we are dedicated to vines and with vines, you can't forget about the land.”
The Award becomes even more significant when one goes through the LIST of Awards-which are filled with the New World producers and UK, with a solitary French producer, Mont Tauch from Languedoc awarded.
