Wine India Moves: Homecoming for Sumedh Mandla at ASPRI

Nov 03: It’s like Homecoming for Sumedh Singh Mandla who was till October 31 the CEO of Grover Zampa Vineyards and who has joined as the Division Head of AWS Global, a new Vertical business initiated by the Mumbai-based Aspri Spirits Pvt. Ltd. with a lot of fresh ideas and new vistas to be explored, writes Subhash Arora who feels the new assignment is very challenging and rewarding in terms of creativity

After leaving Aspri Spirits around 5 years ago, Sumedh had shifted gears, from imported wine marketing to Indian wine producing industry as CEO of Grover Zampa. Before joining Grover Zampa, he had worked for over 4 years with Aspri as CEO of the wine division.

I am Joining Aspri team and will be leading AWS Global the new vertical, Sumedh informed delWine.’ I felt I had reached the height of my learning process with Grover Zampa, which was a great learning experience, and I am thankful for the support I received from my 'GZV board of directors'. I felt I was ready for new challenges to face in unexplored vistas’, he adds.

Welcoming him back to the Aspri-fold, Delhi-based Arun Kumar who is Co –Founder/ Director in Aspri along with Jackie Matai in Mumbai, says, ‘We have been planning expansion for the last year and a half to take the business in a new direction. After everything fell in place, we knew we had to have a person to lead the initiative, which will operate independently of Aspri, though a part of it. Sumedh was an integral part of our team earlier and had made invaluable contribution to the development of Aspri. When he moved from us to join Grover Zampa for widening his horizons and exposure we welcomed his decision and supported him. It is now a sort of homecoming for him and we are very happy that he is back in the Aspri family.’

Explaining further about this new vertical Arun said, ‘we continue to grow and expand in the import business despite several ups and downs but we believed that we must look at potential opportunities the market presents as it is still young and developing. AWS Global will explore all opportunities in the Alcobev space that includes wines as well. It’s a challenging assignment and the person of Sumedh’s stature is a perfect fit. There is a lot of work that needs to go in and Sumedh will drive the initiative right from creating his own team and culminating into a dynamic organization.

Arun Kumar and Jackie Matai founded Aspri Spirits in 2004. ‘We started at ground zero and have presence
