OIV Members Meet in Beaune Next Month

The scientific and political bodies of the world wine and vine sector will meet in Beaune from 27 to 29 of October 2010, where technical experts and scientists of the  44 member nations of OIV will focus on the evolution of the implementation of the strategic plan of the OIV and examine and approve the budget, according to a Release by the Paris-based organisation.

The 44 Member States of (OIV) will hold two meetings of their main bodies- Scientific and Technical Committee and Executive Committee. The first meeting will allow the technical experts and scientists to focus on the evolution of the implementation of the strategic plan of the OIV. The focus would be on the challenges posed by sustainable development, climate warming, or biotechnology. The second meeting will bring together the representatives of the Governments of the Member States of the OIV, to examine and approve the budgets.

The OIV- the International Organisation of Vine and Wine which is often referred to  as the ‘UN of Wine’ has a field of competence that covers wine, grapes in the  unfermented form and  also spirituous beverages of wine as the origin.

About 100 delegates from 30 member countries of OIV are expected to attend. India has informed OIV of their intention to join the prestigious organisation and is awaiting the clearance from MEA (Ministry of External Affairs). DelWine has learnt from reliable sources that India has been invited to attend this important meeting in the capital of Burgundy, as a special guest. It is expected to be the 46 the member as another country has already applied formally. There is a 6-month period for member states to object to an applicant’s entry. Therefore, the statutory period of 6-months has not started in India’s case.

The Director General of OIV, Federico Castellucci says, "These meetings out of the Headquarters (Paris)  are rare and facilitate understanding a sector and their specifics, mainly by the representatives of the Governments”.

OIV is the only scientific organisation and global reference for vineyards and all related product. It is an intergovernmental organisation which aims to harmonise international viticulture standards and encourages scientific innovations in the industry. Mr. Yves Bénard (France) is the current President while Peter Hayes (Australia) is the Vice President. Hayes had met the senior officials of the Ministry of Food Processing and was very satisfied and excited by the prospects of India joining the organisation soon.
