Curtain Raiser: Prowein 2019 opens Gates on March 17-19 for 25th Time

March 01: Claiming to be the world’s leading trade fair for wines and spirits, this largest industry meeting for professionals from viticulture, processing, trade and gastronomy, the 3-day Show Prowein opens in Düsseldorf on March 17-19, 2019 offering a meeting ground for professionals across the world with around 7,000 exhibitors and 60,000 visitors expected to attend, writes Subhash Arora who plans to visit the 25th edition

The emails started as a trickle a month ago-the invitations to visit some stand, activity, programme or an event at the 25th edition of Prowein or the other. But gradually the momentum kept on building up. The crescendo will reach perhaps just before the Prowein kicks off on March 17. The world’s most popular annual wine show is about to open its doors to 60,000 visitors from the world-each with their own agenda, keeping the Messe Dusseldorf fairgrounds by the River Rhine buzzing with activities.

Julia Klöckner, the Federal Minister of Nutrition and Agriculture of Germany, will open the trade fair on the opening day. “There could not have been a better kick-off for ProWein 2019, the leading international trade fair for wines and spirits,” says Marius Berlemann, Global Head of Wine & Spirits and Director of ProWein at Messe Düsseldorf, organisers of the most important annual Show where all the relevant winegrowing areas, including India, will be represented along with around 450 spirit companies.

The sole Indian wine producer present is Grover Zampa Vineyards (GZV)  which like earlier years is participating in Hall 9 – E01and will welcome visitors, says Sumit Jaiswal, Vice President of Marketing and Communications and Exports of GZV. The Indian wine company with highest awarded wines, is a regular participant and reportedly will be represented by Vivek Chandramohan, CEO and Sumit Jaiswal.

At ProWein 2019 all important wine-growing regions are represented and located in the halls numbered by the country. Exhibitors boast the complete Who’s Who of the industry. The spectrum ranges from big wineries to fine boutique estates and many hidden gems. Add to this some 450 spirits suppliers with interesting specialities. These comprehensive ranges are rounded off by a compact programme of side events at exhibitors’ stands and the ProWein Forums.

Prowein Forums

Prowein is known for back-to back Forums organised over 3 days. These include Presentations by Wines of Chile, Comité Champagne 2019, Wine Australia, Brazilian Wine Institute, Sud de France, Wines of South Africa, Wines of Canada, Bolivia, Argentina and of course a couple of Presentations by Messe Dusseldorf that include Trends and Tastings. The Action is all in Hall 10/F234 and may require advance reservations. For details, contact:

https://www.prowein.com

Forum Hall 13 at the farthest end of the fairground would have similar Presentations by Villany Wine Region (Hungary), German Wine Institute, VDP, Friuli Venezia-Giulia where the Result of just concluded Concours Mondial du Sauvignon 2019 - Awards Ceremony and Tasting, will also have Official results announcement and an exclusive tasting of the trophy winners of 2019. Admission is by invitation only though. Piemonte, German Wine Institute, Swiss wines and gastronomy by Paolo Basso, Best Sommelier of the World 2013, Hungarian Wine Agency etc will present different topics. Prof. Damei Li, well known expert from China will talk of Chinese wine regions in depth and taste main varieties by regions. He will tell you that most Chinese wines are consumed in domestic market.

Champagne & Mundusvini Tasting Lounges

Adding a touch of luxury is the Champagne Lounge comprising over 50 tradition-rich Champagne houses – in addition to around 150 brands in the Champagne segment.

The large tasting zone presents the award-winning wines of the spring issue of the just concluded 24th edition of Mundusvini , and also the organic segment. The central Tasting Area in Hall 17 will present around 600 of the award winners of the Spring Session.

The Show website is full of information and a 164 page catalogue (in German-part English) can be downloaded by the interested readers at:

The hundreds of programmes throughout various Halls will make your head spin but its worth the read to decide what you like to focus on, rather than frittering away energy and time after arriving unplanned and without fixing up the meetings.

If you or your business takes you to the world’s finest annual wine show this March, please remember there is so much more than you can handle in these 3 days and you must plan ahead now. The organisers have invested a lot of money to keep the fairgrounds and the Show modern but at the end there is just so much one can achieve in 3 days-and good planning will help tremendously.

With the unique offerings both in size and quality, ProWein is the most important industry get-together for the international wine and spirits industry and delWine wishes them a very successful Prowein 2019.

The next ProWine Asia is scheduled for May 7–10, 2019 in Hong Kong, followed a year later (March 31 – April 3, 2020) by its sister ProWine Asia event in Singapore. But the most important and the flagship for all ProWein events is Prowein 2020, the 26th edition of which will take place from March 15-17 in Düsseldorf.
