Nov 06: South Africa’s revered Wine Guide Platter’s Wine Guide 2019 was launched last night at Cape Town’s Table Bay Hotel with over 200 invitees including the producers achieving the maximum 5-Star ratings reserved for wines that are South African classics and scored 95 points or more, with Mullineux owned by the Mullineux couple (Chris & Andrea) and Bhai Analjit Singh (BAS) from India bestowed the Top Performing Winery of the Year Award, writes Subhash Arora
A total of 90 wines achieved the coveted Five Star status this year. Publisher of Platter’s, Jean-Pierre Rossouw, said: “All wines that scored 93 points or higher in the primary assessment went into a second round of tasting, conducted blind by small panels including experienced outside experts.’
‘The Top Performing Winery of the Year award goes to Mullineux, who are no strangers to Platter’s accolades, having twice previously been Winery of the Year. In the new guide they achieve a remarkable four 5-Stars plus a Wine of the Year,’ says the announcement by the Platter’s Guide and reported in https://news.wine.co.za/
Further, The Editor’s Award for 2019 goes to the famous Newton Johnson Vineyards, as editor Philip van Zyl’s personal commendation of this family venture’s consistently superb quality over a range of styles of wine.
In a message received today from Chris Mullineux by delWine, he says, ‘We have just arrived home from the annual Platter’s award ceremony in Cape Town and are excited to share the news that we have received Platter’s coveted 5 Star Rating for 5 of our wines in the 2019 Platter’s Wine Guide!’
‘Adding to the excitement, our 5- Star 2017 Leeu Passant Stellenbosch Chardonnay from our winery on Leeu Estate in Franschhoek has been named as Chardonnay of the Year, with 97 points. Our 2017 Mullineux Straw Wine from our winery on Roundstone farm in the Swartland was declared as Straw Wine of the Year, with 96 points.’
Mullineux has been awarded overall Top Performing Winery of the year, repeating the achievement received in 2014 and 2016. This is the first time in the history of the Guide that a winery has achieved this award 3 times. Mullineux wines that rated the full 5 Stars are:
2017 Mullineux Old Vines White Blend (95)
2016 Mullineux SCHIST Syrah (95)
2016 Mullineux IRON Syrah (95)
2017 Mullineux Straw Wine (96)
2017 Leeu Passant Stellenbosch Chardonnay (97)
‘Our 2017 wines above represent our 10th vintage, and the fact that the judges appreciate our consistent focus on expressing site in an elegant and refined manner, make all the extremely hard work we and our teams have put into our vineyards and cellar during the past decade all the more rewarding. We feel honoured that we have received a total of 25 Five Stars to date from Platter’s, especially because there are now so many top quality South African producers making incredible wines.
‘We are proud and humbled to with this achievement - the first winery in South Africa to be named Winery of the Year by the widely respected Platter's Guide is a wonderful accolade, and for all 3 to have come since our partnership with BAS is a reflection of what a good fit we are, ’ wrote Chris.
Chris adds, ‘All our Mullineux and Leeu Passant wines can be tasted at our tasting room situated on Leeu Estates in Franschhoek from Monday to Sunday 10am- 5pm. We are open to visits to our cellar on Roundstone Farm in the Swartland on Fridays by appointment. To book a tasting, please email tastings@mlfwines.com.
