‘However this figure is only a weak indication of the current Chilean wine presence in India. The Chilean wines have been quite high on the popularity index within the wine consuming market. We are committed to the cause of popularizing Chilean Wines in India. We want to bring Chilean wines closer to the consumer. We have started promoting the wines since last year and had a tremendous response with our first Chilean Wine Show in November 2010 in New Delhi and Chennai. We have also planned to do three major wine events in Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi where the finest Chilean wines available in the Indian market, will be showcased. We also have around 28 new wineries coming to India on the 1st of June and we will be holding a seminar/tasting of their wines in Delhi,’ Says Nestor Riveros, Minister Counsellor Commercial ProChile Commercial Office, Delhi.
He Adds, ‘subsequently we plan to organize wine dinners for the members of the Delhi Wine Club and the Indian wine society where we shall showcase the premium range of Chilean wines available in the Indian market. I hope by organising events like these, we will be able to bring up the market share of Chilean wines in India and become the 3rd largest wine exporting country to India in the next two years.’
Following a steady trend led by its booming wine market, Chile’s olive oil industry also expanded its export markets significantly last year, according to Odepa. The total value of Chilean olive oil exports reportedly reached $1.1 million in January 2011, representing an increase of 139 percent over the amount exported in January last year. They exported around 286 tons of oil in this period, a 226 percent increase over exports in the same month of the previous year.
Chile’s national olive oil industry has been active since 1952. In the late 90s they began to invest heavily in this sector and develop marketing strategies for export. By 2004 Chile had developed a total of 3,700 hAs olive groves. Today Chile boasts over 20,000 hAs of Olive growing land and produces roughly 8,500 tons of oil per year. The country plans to have over 35,000 hAs of olive vineyards by 2014. Reportedly, the country produces extra virgin oil exclusively.
