Curtain Raiser: World Bulk Wine Exhibition opens on November 23-24

Nov 18: The 7th edition of the World Bulk Wine Exhibition (WBWE) opens at the regular venue, Amsterdam RAI (Hall 4 and 5) on November 23-24, with a 15% increase in exhibitor participation and sales stands from 21 countries to welcome over 6,000 wine professionals, writes Subhash Arora who finds the fair very interesting and useful for Indian importers and producers since it represents 38% of the wine consumed in the world

Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Chile, China, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Kosovo, Malaysia, Moldova, Morocco, New Zealand, Portugal, South Africa, Spain and the United States are participating this year, with 20% additional space available. (The provisional list of exhibitors may be viewed on  http://www.worldbulkwine.com/esp/expositores2015.php )

It may be pertinent to note that these  21 exhibiting countries represent more than 85% of the international business conducted in the bulk wine sector, which continues to grow in quality and quantity every year, according to the organizers. The WBWE also displays a wide range of bulk and bag-in-box wines, from appellation wines with a protected geographical indication (GI) to those with a varietal appellation, as well as generic wines intended for either mixing, making sparkling wine or flavoured wines such as vermouth. This diverse offer and the potential for multiple sales contracts, as well as origin to destination packaging agreements, make this international congregation very exclusive.

The World Bulk Wine Market

Recent data provided by the Spanish Observatory for the Wine Market (OEMV) confirms the huge evolution undergone by the bulk wine sector since 2000 when the global sales had risen up to 20.34 million hL, with a value of €1,231 million, each liter selling for an average price of € 0.60. In 2014, exports reached 37.83 million hL -with an increase in volume, of 85%. Valued at €2,715 million, each liter was sold for an average price of € 0.72, an increase of 20% in 14 years.

The percentage share of bulk wine in exports has grown in volume from 34% up to 37.7% and in value from 9% up to 10.5%, in spite of the overall price drop, from the year 2000 to 2014.

The data currently available for the 2015 crops indicates that Italy, France and Spain are set to be the biggest wine producing countries, in that order.  Production in Italy is estimated in 48 million hL, followed by France with 46 million hL and Spain with 37 million hL (not including the additional 5.5 million hL in must wine).

World Bulk Wine Exhibition

Click For Large ViewThe World Bulk Wine Exhibition has already become the biggest fair in the world focusing on wine commercialization, in terms of volume. Last year saw the presence of over 5,800 visitors from 59 different countries. More than 200 wineries from 19 countries had participated-France, Spain, Italy, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Moldavia, Australia, Macedonia, Malaysia, Austria, Ukraine, New Zealand, Belgium, Germany, Romania, United States, Georgia and Hungary.

However, the importance of the World Bulk Wine Exhibition does not lie only in the number of participating winemakers, but also in the amount of wine that is transacted and in the revenue generated at the fair.

Some interesting Features at WBWE

Besides several Conferences which are the highlights of the WBWE, following are some of the other interesting features:

Voice of Wine Award

To be awarded at the opening of the Conference on the first day, The Coop Languedoc Roussillon has been selected the recipient of this year’s Award-a tribute to the continuing effort carried out by the region in France and Abroad. Languedoc Roussillon is the first wine region in France, with 236,000 hA and up to 10 million hL of production, 40% of which is sold in Bulk.

Gourmet Area

As they enter the Halls 4 and 5, visitors will find on the right, a showroom with culinary creations inspired by the wine regions of the participating countries, with several dishes prepared using wines from their regions. Like every year, Chef Kike Piñeiro and his team, will supervise a live cooking area, creating a unique gastronomical space specially designed for the fair. The 35-year-old Galician chef has been passionate about cooking since he was 14 years old. He worked in prestigious restaurants such as Moncho VilasHostal dos Reis Católicos at Santiago de Compostela or Arzak and was the winner ofthe 10th Spanish National Gastronomy Contest in 2011/2012.

The Bulk Wine Competition

In order to emphasize the quality of bulk Wines transacted at the Show, the organisers had started with a blind Tasting a couple of years ago. Over 100 samples entered from across the globe will be judged by 18 wine professionals from 14 countries including India which will be represented by Subhash Arora. International Bulk Wine Competition was conceived to guarantee transparency and a better knowldege and the quality of bulk Wines and will be carried out at the venue a day earlier, on 23rd November.

Silent Tasting Area

This is a regular feature of the Show where wines can be tasted in privacy without any interference. The Wines are kept in bottles with all the technical details. This offers the best possibility of Tasting the widest range of Wines from the entire world.

THE VINE

Click For Large ViewThrough this area the WBWE provides a large forum of commercial synergies for  companies built around vine and the wine-a meeting point where the wine sector could make the most of all resources and technologies at its disposal, allowing the vine sector to reach its full potential in terms of profit.

A place where food and beauty companies can develop their products and activities, alongside companies from other sectors, as well as technology and service supplier’s companies, whose products are derived from, byproducts, sub-products and/or residues from the vine or the vinification.
