Slightly Disappointing Performance by Indian Wines at DAWA

Sep 17: Although the tally of 14 Awards bagged by Indian wines at the decanter Asia Wine Awards announced yesterday is similar to 2014 (14) and 2013 (14), the quality of Awards has come down drastically with only 5 Bronze Medals and 9 Commended, with the last year’s Regional Trophy Winner Grover Zampa Sauvignon Blanc not making the cut but with the consolation of Vijay Amritraj Red winning the sole Silver medal

Grover leads the tally with the Vijay Amritraj Reserve Collection ’13 bagging the sole Silver. Their La Reserve (Bronze), Chenin Blanc (Bronze), and Art Series Collection Cab-Shiraz , Zampa Soiree Brut NV and Zampa Soiree Rose NV received the ‘Commended’; make their total tally at 6.

Sula Chenin Blanc ’15, Sauvignon Blanc ’15, Riesling ’15 and Rasa Cabernet Sauvignon were all awarded ‘Commended,’ coming next with 4.

Four Seasons bags 2 Awards- Commended each for Barrique Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ’11 and Chenin Blanc ’14.

Soma Vineyards of Nashik, owned by Pradip Pachpatil, an ex-Vice President of Sula has won a Bronze in his maiden year for Chenin Blanc Gold. Similarly York Blanc de Blanc Brut has been ‘Commended’ for its maiden vintage.

Interestingly, Four Seasons recently received a Double Gold for their Barrique Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ’11 at the CWSE ‘2015 international competition in Shanghai, China. Additionally, their Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc both won a Gold while the Barrique Reserve Shiraz managed a Bronze.

Last year India won 1 International Trophy, 4 Silver Medals, 5 Bronze Medals and 4 ‘Commended’ taking the tally to 14-same as this year but with many more models. ‘Commended’ is like a consolation prize-some call it a lollipop for the producers to sing their own songs for marketing their product and hopefully come back next year.

The results were similar in numbers (14)-but quality of medals was much better than this year- with 1 Silver, 9 Bronze Medals and 4 ‘Commended’.

A total of 2596 entries were submitted this year. With 15 International Trophies, 24 Regional Trophies, 41 Gold medals, 443 Silver medals, 1103 Bronze medals  and 610 Commended   wines, a total of 2,236 (86%) wines have been Awarded.

Steven Spurrier is the Chairman of the competition sponsored by the Decanter magazine.
