Curtain Raiser: Austrian International Wine Festival VieVinum opens on June 9 in Vienna

June 05: Now into 20th year, the biennial wine show of primarily Austrian wines, VieVinum is ready to welcome guests and visitors for the eleventh time at Hofburg Vienna, with a record number of around 1000 trade visitors including 500 first times and 160 Press people, to the 3-day show being organised from June 9-11, writes Subhash Arora who has been invited again this time to attend

This year’s edition of VieVinum will see over 1,000 merchants, sommeliers, restaurateurs and journalists from 45 countries converge into Vienna’s Hofburg Palace for the twentieth-anniversary celebration of Austria’s greatest wine festival.

A majority of the trade visitors will be from primary export markets such as Germany, the USA, Switzerland and Russia. In addition, the AWMB will host over 100 wine consultants representing a big Belgian supermarket chain, as well as visitors from up-and-coming export markets in Asia including India and South America. More than half of the attendees are coming for the first time to VieVinum, at the invitation of the Austrian Wine Marketing Board (AWMB)

Austrian wines are hot

Austria’s wine producers are very optimistic to see good results at VieVinum after an excellent 2017 vintage both in terms of quality and quantity. This vintage gives them an advantage over other countries in Europe, where disastrous weather resulted in disappointing shortfalls in volume last year. They expect and unprecedented number to take interest in the Festival.

Additional momentum with regard to initial business transactions promises the fact that wine from Austria is currently one of the hottest categories on the worldwide market, as indicated by the record export figures from the year 2017, says Willi Klinger, Chairman of AWMB. For the first time ever, Austrian exports crossed the €150 million mark, touching €158 million and achieved an average price per litre of 3.39 Euro, another new all-time high, according to the Press Release.

Besides wine tasting at the Festival there are several attractive side events revolving around  wines and are worth attending. For instance 22 internationally well-known wineries in Austria, Germany, Italy and Hungary that stand out for the highest quality wines and individuality, and are members of Respect-Biodynamic- a body founded in 2007, will present wines produced strictly by biodynamic guidelines at an event to be conducted by the Wine Advocate.

‘A great year for great wines from the Renowned Wineries of Burgenland’ would be another event for which the entrance is free. 15 Young winemakers who've matured in a wild way will present their wines made in their different style in yet another seminar. There is a Master class on wines from Croatia and Slovenia -2 of the well-known countries from Eastern Europe making quality wines. There are a few seminars from different DAC regions of Austria as well. For full details of the exciting events, visit:

This year’s VieVinum is expected to take Austria’s wine industry in to the higher gear, and lead to more substantial gains on the world market. The environment for this is better than ever before. We have only 3 days  to see how this all pans out.
