DWC Wine Dinner with difference at Dental Studio

March 31: For a decent wine tasting, one does not necessarily need to go to a fancy restaurant, but quality catered food and an opportunity to taste several wines without sticking to a rigorous pairing regime at a comfortable place-even a dental studio, could be a perfect place for a private event, writes Subhash Arora President of Delhi Wine Club, who recently organised highly successful such an event at Smile Studio at Greater Kailash-1 Delhi where over 70 people enjoyed around 15 individual labels

Dental studio for a wine event is slightly unorthodox but during the 16 years of its existence, the Delhi Wine Club tries to take a different path every now and then. A modern, chic Smile Studio is new, very clean, spacious and excellent venue for such an event, with Audio-visual facilities available and live music possible. The evening started off well with Mionetto Prestige Prosecco Brut doc Treviso, made by the Valdobbiadene Prosecco producer. The winery, started 130 years ago, now belongs to the well-known German Sekt (sparkling wine) producing  group Henkell. The wine was recommended by delWine in a September, 2017 issue for its readers. Visit:

The winery sold over 170,000 cases (9-liter) last year and is the biggest selling Prosecco brand in the USA. With lots of bubbles on uncorking, and flavours of golden apples with shades of pears, it had good acidity for the sugar content of around 10-12 gms/liter and was well matched with all the four starters-Chilli Garlic Potato Bites, Cheddar Jalapeno Focaccia, Charred Bell Pepper Pesto Chicken Skewers and ,Pesto Prawn Olivet (olive wrapped with prawn).

Following Prosecco, there were a few other Indian sparklers like Sula Tropical Brut and Chandon Rose Brut to give the guests an opportunity to compare the two different styles of bubblies. This was followed by several labels of Czech wine samples-including a couple of bottles of Riesling, Chardonnay and a bone-dry Rose made from Zweigelt with Provence-type light pink colour that was loved by the members.

Then there were a spate of wines from different countries, grape and styles- at least around 15 labels. The objective was for members to taste as many as they could and form their own opinions. Arora was on hand for any discussions-as was Charles Donnadieu, the French corporate Sommelier who was a special guest. He was quite happy with the Czech wines- especially the Riesling which he found not enticing by itself but excellent accompaniment with food. The best liked wine was Rulandske Sede Pozdni Sber Polosladke Oblast Marva 2011 and 2013 white wines. Made by Tomas Krist they were slightly off dry but nice acidity made them go very well with food as well as on their own. Red wine lovers found an Italian Merlot very compatible with their palate.

The guests also had the opportunity of interaction with Dr. Ekta Chadha, a style designer and owner of the Studio, who insists too much wine at a sitting may not be good for the gums and plaque and one should be careful in the quantity consumed. Dr Ms. Kavita Devgan, a nutritionist at the Studio was all praise for a limited amount of red wine with the diet to keep the weight under check. The resident Heart Specialist Dr. Rajneesh Jain had nice words to say about wine drinking with moderation for heart health. Guests were seen chatting with them about their individual questions after they spoke briefly.

Dabur’s Red Paste does not use the must from the grapes leaving resveratrol in it after fermentation-yet;  but they had interesting gift hampers for a few of the lucky guests whose number exceeded the expectation this evening. An excellent relaxed evening with live instrumental music in the background where the members could drink any wine without worrying about matching with the food (though there were infinite options today) or even sharing their opinion about any of the wines. In general, they were very happy with the evening which had several non-members as invitees and one hopes they had the benefit of the talk by Subhash Arora and hopefully, a few got converted into drinking wine.
