‘Subhash Arora's passion for wine goes back to over 30 years when he was a teetotaller. He founded the Delhi Wine Club in 2002 to promote wine culture in India through events that include 5-course wine dinners generally with 5 wines. Although the club is impartial to the origin of wines, the Italian wines get more attention because of the ever increasing popularity of the Italian cuisine. The club which was voted as the best wine club of India by the Wine Business International in Germany has organised 138 events for a membership that runs between 160 and 180. The club disseminates wine related information through the first wine webzine, started in 2002,’ reports F & B News.

The report goes on to add the efforts made by Cav. Arora in promoting the wine culture and disseminating information about the wine Industry as President of Indian Wine Academy. ‘Arora also founded Indian Wine Academy in 2003, through which wine consultancy and educational services are offered. DelWine, a newsletter that goes out to over 13000 qualified viewers globally, 6 times a month and has published 291 editions is edited by him. This complimentary India-centric e-Newsletter keeps the subscribers abreast about the wine industry in general with a special emphasis on the Indian wine industry.‘

Writing about the visits to Italy and how he helped the Italian wine industry, it added,’ he frequently visits different regions of Italy for various tastings. He has spoken at seminars, judged competitions and writes voraciously about Italian and other wines. He helps the Italian industry to understand the complicated Indian industry and facilitates the process of exports professionally.’

‘Mr. Subhash Arora is the President of the Delhi Wine Club and of the Indian Wine Academy. In his persistent effort for the promotion of the culture of wine in India, Mr. Arora has dedicated special attention to Italy. He has widely promoted the Italian wine culture and Italian wineries in India. He has collaborated in a special publication dedicated to Italian wines in India and has also participated in different cultural and promotional initiatives in the food and wine sector.’ read the citation by H.E. Roberto Toscano, the Ambassador of Italy while giving the title award at his residence last Wednesday.

Scores of individuals have been sending the congratulatory messages.

Message from Angelo Gaja in Piemonte summarises that the wine promotion habit cannot be kicked. The message says, ‘I am writing on behalf of Mr. Gaja and the staff. What great news that you have been knighted by the Italian government for your devotion to Italian wines and producers! We are very proud that you wanted to share this personal success with Gaja and wish you all the best for your future projects, which we are sure, will ever include wine passion. The world of wine is something that enters your blood and will never leave you.’

Says Michele Shah, a Tuscany based highly regarded British wine journalist and author, ‘Hey Subhash, congratulations! A well deserved commendation! You are a dedicated and passionate ambassador of Italy's wines and thanks to you Italy has a bright future in India. Bravissimo!!!!Un abbraccio. Michele.

Carlo Nerozzi writes from Italy, ‘Dear Cav. Subhash, I am happy about the important honour which had been conferred to you by our President. This is an important step to develop the good relations between India and Italy especially in the wine field. Many compliments and kind regards.’

Elena Tessari who produces excellent Soave and Valpolicella in her La Cappuccina winery near Verona comments, ‘when I read your newsletter, what a big and very pleasant surprise I discovered! So many congratulations to you, for your great passion for wine and love for life! With the sweetest toast to you, cheers!’

Says Dan Traucki, a well-known Australian writer is indulgent when he says, ‘Cav Subhash, does this mean that next time we meet I have to bow to you? I will do so gladly in deference to you great knowledge & wine skill. Congratulations my friend- well deserved. Salute’ Dan the Aussiewineman

An accolade well deserved bestowed on an objective wine Ambassador of the world’, says Yegas Naidoo, a wine connoisseur and an international jurist from South Africa.

Raj Paul of Houston didn’t even know about the award, like most non-Italians. He says, ‘Congratulations & well done - who knew the Italians even had knights! You should have asked them for a case of super tuscans to celebrate the occasion. Regardless, its quite an honor but I must warn you not to expect us to call you 'Sir Subhash'. Raj

Satish Manocha, an IIT engineer who had retired as the MD of ITI Industries has another viewpoint when he says, ‘you deserve many such really world recognitions for a great service (why not Indian award first), that also for a professional and an Industrialist of your calibre. It is a pity that India recognizes a great talent only after another country awards and accepts an achievement of an excellent accomplished Indian first. It happened in many cases, even for Nobel Laureatte Shriman Rabindra Nath Tagoreji, brainiest Mathematician Ramanujam ,  Scientist Sir C.V. Raman to mention a few. Maybe you can enlighten me on a reason for this wrong thing.’

Ritu Memani, a young member of the Delhi Wine Club writes,’ Congratulations! You have done wonders for the club. We all know that, your passion shines through everything you do. I’m sure this is not the end, this is the beginning of many accolades that will make our club and country more proud.’

Balaji Rao, who founded the Hyderabad Wine Club, writes,’ Dear Subhash It is a happy occasion for all wine lovers of India. On behalf of 'Hyderabad Wine Club' we congratulate you and appreciate your efforts in promoting wine culture is India and your support to our club.’

The Award implies the use of official and legal title of ‘Cavaliere’ (‘Sir’ in English) but does not grant any pecuniary or tangible benefits; it is a mere recognition of the meritorious service. Besides the certificate, it includes a medal (Nastro for males and Fiocco di Nastro for females), smaller medal (Nastrino and Fiocco di Nastrino) and a pin (Rosetta and Spilla resp.).

An article by IANS also gives the details of the other award winners.

Dear Mr. Subhash Arora Congratulations for the recent Italian Star Order. This is certainly the recognition of your fantastic job , not only with the Italians  but also for the entire Wine World. I believe that you were not present in Mumbai for the Wine Fair, but we shall meet again, may be in Bordeaux. ???If you still intend to come to Europe, the offer to visit us in Alentejo, still stands. Best Regards.  António Estarreja

Dear Subhash, first of all congratulations for being appointed Wine Knight India by the Italian Govenment. I am very glad to see that at least the Italian Government recognizes what you do for wines from all around the world - and especially Italian wines - in India. There should be more countries following this example and also appoint you knight or ambassador for their wines, as there is certainly no one in India who puts such an effort in educating people about wine. Please also accept some sincere congratulations from Agnes, Fritz and Erni, who are very proud and happy that you receive this well deserved
award of excellence and have become an Italian Knight!Despite skipping some of the events this year, it seems that you are still travelling a lot to fulfil your task as an ambassador of wine. Whenever you come to Germany this year, just let us know and I am sure that we can somehow meet at this time, maybe even with Fritz and Erni. Congratulations once again for this excellent achievement and all the very best Marlies

My very warm if somewhat belated congratulations on being knighted by the Italian Government. for the stellar services rendered to the cause of the Italian wine industry. This will certainly give a fillip to the consumption of Italian wines here. I hope this will also enable you to better lobby with the central & state governments here to rationalise taxes on imported wines.
