Wine Ice Cream Legalised in New York

Those who object to the Indian laws being too strict and outdated may be interested to know that wine ice cream produced in New York could not be sold legally in the home state till yesterday when it finally cleared the legislation and can be sold to adults

Governor David A Paterson signed legislation legalizing the manufacture and sale of the ice cream. It can be sold only to persons over 21 years of age and an ID will have to be shown. 'We have a responsibility in government to enact laws that make our state a better place to live and work,' Paterson said in a statement.

This means that if Delhi were to follow the logic, it would be available in the liquor retail shops only and the sale would be only to 25+ year olds.

Produced by Mercer's Dairy in Boonville, New York, Wine flavoured ice-cream comes in five flavours including  Peach White Zinfandel, Red Raspberry Chardonnay and Cherry Merlot.

If wine ice cream's popularity in other countries is any indication, it will be a hot seller.
"It does extremely well overseas," said Roxaina Hulburt, director of Marketing for Mercer's. "We do extremely well in the Netherlands. If you fly into the airport in the Netherlands, there's a banner hanging in the food court that says Mercer's Ice Cream and shows our wine ice cream in the Netherlands."

These ice creams took two years to develop by this central New York Dairy. It has 5% alcohol content. It contains 210-300 calories per 73 gms. Of serving.

So next time you fly through Amsterdam, have wine in a different form and check out the wine ice cream at the food court.

This could be a great business opportunity for many in the wine trade, particularly with the opening of wine bars in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Chandigarh etc.

Perhaps Sula Vineyard could add this to their menu at their tasting room in Nashik or Château Indage could spruce up their food menu at Athena wine bars?!
