This was the 11th edition of the competition owned and organised by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles which is a part of Vinopres in Belgium. Although, still a small scale competition, it had an international jury that tasted samples of only Chilean wines and Pisco. As Boudouin Havaux, CEO of Vinopres says, ‘ the idea of starting this competition was to help Chilean producers who are into exports or who are interested to export and is not intended to compete with any existing competition’. A majority of producers expressed that the Awards are very helpful for exporters.
In fact, a couple of producers present at the Award Giving Ceremony at the rooftop restaurant at Hotel Noi confirmed that they take part only in Chile By CMB competition since it boasts of an international jury and a well- established competition. He however conceded that there was work to be done in the competition to lift it to the standards of the main competition- Concours Mondial de Bruxelles which is held every year in different countries- the next year it is being held in Beijing, China.
Following the example of the parent competition, Chile by CMB has been held at different wine regions of Chile in the past. For the first time, it was held at Huilo-Huilo, a natural biological reserve, about 700 kms south of Santiago in beautiful surroundings, adding to the value for the judges. Says, Sylvia Cava who co-ordinates the competition, being a resident of Chile,’ the idea to move to this region for the first time was to expose journalists and tasters to a unique region that ought to help Wine tourism in this area. The judges were of the uniform opinion that it was truly a divine venue, even though it might be a bit more expensive for the non South Americans tourists.
The competition also showcased the high quality of the wines participating. As indicated by Havaux, the competition would be held in another wine region next year, with focus on more samples and higher number of diversified judges. CMB plans to start the competition in other South American countries like Columbia and Peru as there have been requests from these countries for similar reasons.
