Travis Fuller is a fellow judge at the MundusVini International Wine Competition that concluded last week in Neustadt am der Weinstrasse, Germany. While informing delWine about the milestone, he claimed that Hardys was now available reportedly in 54 % of all wine drinking countries globally. He, however, clarified that the number did not mean that their sales were the highest in numbers even though the 160-year old Hardys is the biggest selling Australian wine brand in the United Kingdom. Around 2 million glasses of Hardys are consumed every day in these countries, according to the parent Accolade Wines website.
Hardys sells around 9 million cases yearly throughout the world. However, the number is still less than Yellow Tail brand of John Casella, owner of the family-owned Casella wines that sells around 12 million cases globally with around 9.5 million in the USA alone. Hardys produces some of Australia’s greatest wines— including the iconic Eileen Hardy Shiraz which has been classified an excellent wine by experts overseas and within Australia by James Halliday
Fifth generation Hardys family member, William (Bill) Hardy, said this was an overwhelming result for his family.
However, Hardys lags behind in sales in India where its ‘Stamp’ label is sold by Sula pan India. During a recent visit to India, Nick Pringle, the UK based Commercial Director of Accolade Wines (Hardys in India) - S. Europe, Africa, Middle East, South and Central America, conducted several tastings at many places in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai, including at the prestigious Delhi Golf Club in conjunction with the Indian Wine Academy. A couple of blends were really loved by the members. However, at around 5000 cases, it is far behind the other strong Australian brand Jacobs Creek which seems to have an edge because of its deep distribution channel throughout India because of its Chivas Regal Scotch whisky and other popular liquor products which have a big and deep market.
Fifth generation descendant of company founder Thomas Hardy, William 'Bill' Hardy says it's an amazing result but one that wouldn't have surprised his visionary great, great grandfather. "Thomas Hardy was one of the first to export wines from Australia. His vision was to produce wines of quality and character which would be prized in the world market," Bill said.
Hardys signed a three year partnership with Cricket Australia in November 2013.
