Red Wine may help Hearing Loss

Wine and Health: Red Wine may help Hearing Loss

Feb 26: It may be years before the message reaches out to the deaf ears of our politicians, bureaucrats and decision makers in India about the advantages of wine for health when drunk in moderation but a recent study interestingly suggests that resveratrol found in red wines also has the potential to protect against hearing loss and cognitive decline

The lead researcher of the study, Dr. Michael Seidman from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit area, reportedly states, "our latest study focuses on resveratrol and its effect on the body's response to injury - something that is believed to be the cause of many health problems including Alzheimer's disease, cancer, aging and hearing loss."

Resveratrol is an anti-oxidant chemical found more in red wines (and also chocolates and foods, that protects against the body's inflammatory process as it relates to aging, hearing loss and cognition). A study was conducted on a group of mice one of which was provided with resveratrol while the other group was deprived of the compound. Both groups were then subjected to a loud noise. It was observed that the mice who were given the resveratrol compound suffered a comparatively less hearing loss when compared to the group that was not provided with the chemical.

Dr. Seidman says, “Resveratrol is a very powerful chemical that seems to protect against the body’s inflammatory process.” He further adds “By giving the animals resveratrol, we can reduce the amount of hearing and cognitive decline as it relates to ageing, cognition and hearing loss.”

The study has been published in the journal Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (OTO). Prior to this, several studies have already shown how red wine protects against heart diseases, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and even cancer, with moderate and regular intake though some people still doubt the efficacy of the results of these studies.

Another factor conveniently overlooked is that when red wine is made from grape juice, the concern of the winemaker is not to reinforce the wine with resveratrol that comes out from the skins and pips. If increasing a massive resveratrol amount were the objective, the wine would become overly extracted, making it too astringent and practically undrinkable.

Hearing loss affects nearly one in five people and hearing steadily declines with age.

DelWine has often recommended drinking of 1-2 glasses of wine regularly-preferably red wines. The advisory holds for the politicians, bureaucrats and decision makes as mentioned above-editor
