Chilean Wine Tops WS Top 100 List

Wine Spectator has announced the much awaited Top 100 wine list for wines of 2008 with a Chilean wine from Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta topping the list, followed by the Margaux's Chateau Rauzan Ségla 2005 and the Portuguese Douro Reserva Quinta do Crasto 2005. WS TOP 100

The Top 10 wines include Barolo 2004 from Pio Cesare which is being imported by Naresh Uttamchandani of Sovereign Impex.

Lapostolle is imported by Moet Hennessey. Cos d'Estournel which was tasted in Delhi on Wednesday takes 28th position despite 98 points, because of the rather high listed price of $ 206. Fattoria di Felsina Chianti Classico (51) is imported by Amfora wines.

Vishal Kadakia of the Wine Park in Mumbai informs us that he is importing 3 of the wines in the list: St.-Urbans-Hof, Riesling, QbA, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, 2007 (56), Reichsgraf Von Kesselstatt, Riesling Kabinett, Piesporter Goldtropfchen, Mosel, 2007 (79) as well as Querciabella, Chianti Classico, 2006 (81)

The list has several wines in other Indian importers' portfolio including Concha Y Toro (12) and several, Bordeaux wines. Marchesi Frescobaldi Chianti Ruffina Reserva 2005, Chateau Neuf du Pape  from Ch. Beaucastel 2005, Louis Latour, Zind Humbrecht Riesling Alsace 2006 are some of the wines that are already being imported by Brindco and Sonarys.

Making of Top 100

Each year, Wine Spectator editors survey the wines reviewed over the past 12 months and selects the most exciting for the Top 100.

In 2008, around19, 500 wines from around the world were reviewed by tasting blind. More than 5,300 of them earned outstanding ratings (90+ points on the100-point scale).

The editors narrowed the list down based on four criteria: quality (represented by score); value (reflected by release price); availability (measured by case production or cases imported); and an X-factor called excitement. But no equation determines the final selections: These choices reflect the editors' judgment and passion about the wines tasted.

Fourteen countries are represented, making the 2008 list the most diverse group in the history of the Top 100, which debuted in 1988. Quality
remains high, with an average score of 93 points, consistent with the past two years.

With the dollar weak early in the year, however, prices showed an increase, pushing the average to $52 per bottle.

Leasingham Riesling Clare Valley Magnus 2007 was the lowest priced wine at $12 with 91 points. Château L'Evan Pomerol 2005 was the only wine in the portfolio that was awarded 100 points. At $ 260 it was also the most expensive wine chosen.

Among the Wine Spectator 100 Top Wines 2008, the FELSINA Chianti Classico 2006 ranks in 51st place, ahead of all other Chianti Classicos. This would make it the best Chianti Classico in the world. We are importing and selling this in India. If anyone would like to buy this, prices are available on request. Contact: info@amforawine.com
