A report by global hotel investment service firm Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels notes that about 7.3 million international tourist visited Mumbai in 2006-07 recording a growth of 9.2 per cent over the previous year, says ET.
"Given Mumbai's positioning as a commercial hub and logistic centre, business travel remains the key motivator for visiting Mumbai. However, the leisure segment has further potential for growth," the report added.
The domestic tourist arrival also jumped by 27.6 per cent at 14.6 million in 2006-07 from that in the previous fiscal year ending on March 2007.
At present, Mumbai has 74 government approved hotels with a total count of around 9,500 rooms.
The study found that the new projects were mainly local brands, many of which are extensions of existing properties expanding to other parts of the city. |
