Chilean Wines: Chile at the Pole Position

Nov 05: With the revival of ProChile in India a couple of years ago , Chilean wines have taken huge strides in promoting wines from this Southern Hemisphere with their Head, Nestor Riveros pushing various programmes aggressively and the Ambassador H.E. Mr. Cristian Barros fully supporting the initiatives that would make the country win the pole position in promoting and showcasing wines of their country.

As Riveros informs delWine with a confident smile ProChile has stepped on the gas and is organising as many as seven events within the span of two months for the promotion of Chilean wines which are ‘not only known for their excellent Price Quality Ratio but of late have been producing excellent wines using the terroir in different parts of the country to their full advantage.’

These events have either already taken place or are under execution in New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata and even in Colombo in Sri Lanka, he adds. ‘The chain of events started on 20th September in New Delhi and has functions lined up till December 4. The Chilean Wine Tour at the Lalit in Delhi was an event targeted to promote around 30 varieties of Chilean wines coming from 8 different wineries and which are yet to register their presence in India. They were introduced to various importers and trade professionals and we shall hopefully have some of these new brands in India,’ says Nestor adding, ‘other than that, the event was attended by around 250 people and also included members of the media and Diplomatic corp.

At the National Day celebration in New Delhi at the hotel Claridges two days later, four varieties of wines were offered to more than 250 guests who were at this celebration. A pink sparkling strawberry wine, Fresita, was appreciated by the guests. Pisco Sur Capel, a traditional Chilean drink was also a highlight. The national Day celebration at Kolkata coordinated with the Consulate also showcased four varieties of Chilean wines to more than 350 guests from the Indian authorities, diplomatic Corp., entrepreneurs and importers.

Chilean Wine and Food Festival on November 9 at 7 pm at The Park New Delhi will showcase around twelve major brands of Chilean wines present in the Indian market presently to be attended by around 240 guests. It will be interesting to see the launch of the Chilean Salmon at this event, courtesy Los Fiordos of Agro Super group. Chilean tinned Razor Shells and Clams will also be there. The commercial capital of India, Mumbai, will see eight brands of the major Chilean wines which are currently available in India at the Chilean Wine Festival in Mumbai on November 17 at Tote on the Turf Restaurant. Around 220 guests are expected to enjoy this event.

The Chilean Wine and Food Festival reaches Colombo, Sri Lanka on November 30. In a coordinated effort of the Agricultural Office of the Consulate in Colombo and the main wine importers of Sri Lanka, the showcasing of around seven of the Chilean Brands present in the market will take place. Again, around 240 guests are expected at the event where the Chilean Salmon, will be launched courtesy Los Fiordos of Agro Super group.
Chilean vineyards and wineries will also participate in the fair- Fine Food India 2011 early next month, promoting its wine and looking for access to the Indian market.

ProChile India is going all out for greater market presence of the Chilean wines in India and is very hopeful of the positive results, primarily because Chilean wines speak for themselves with  good value for money almost a given.
Time will tell how many positions Force Chile will move ahead in the race to gain the market share in India With inputs from Mr. Nestor Riveros, Head in India-ProChile
