Wine India Moves: Craig Wedge coos FWM

Oct 28: In a move that some in the industry might find surprising, Craig Wedge, the Senior Vice President of Mumbai based importer, Finewinesnmore has been promoted as the Chief Operative Officer with the CEO Dharti Desai seemingly deciding to take a back seat, so far as the wine business is concerned, writes Subhash Arora who met him in Mumbai last Monday at the Italian wine tastings.

An ex-Sommelier at JW Marriott where he was assigned to develop the wine portfolio and make it into a wine destination, the Australian has since been with Fine Wines N More where he quickly rose to the position of Senior Vice President. As a Diwali gift, he got promoted over a week ago to the position of Chief Operating Officer, responsible for total operations of the wine importing company. Confirming to delWine, Craig said that Dharti had decided to hand him the reigns of the company and concentrate on her other businesses which take her to New York every quarter. As the COO, he would be responsible for the total operations of the company.

Earlier, Abimalek David, the former Vice President of Sultania Trading Co which is primarily involved with liquor marketing had joined FWM a few months ago. He is responsible for the total sales of the company including Fratelli Wines for Mumbai. Till recently, FWM had been the marketing advisor to the company.

With the top level reinforced, Dharti can perhaps enjoy the fruits of professional management of the company she founded barely 4 years ago. She would naturally find more time to devote to her Direct marketing business which has been flourishing from day one and has been in fact, supporting the wine business.

Several phone calls to express her views remain unanswered- perhaps she is in New York for her other group businesses. It would be interesting to see if the company manages to become one of the top three companies with the top spot being permanently kept by Brindco since 2002, with the recent management moves.

Dharti Desai Says:

Dear Subhash, Thank you for your article announcing the much deserved promotion of Craig to COO of FWM. As discussed this morning, it is unfortunate that we could not connect. Just a few corrections:

1) I will not be taking a complete back seat as FWM is my baby and we still have a long way to go, but I am very happy to give leadership to Craig who has been with FWM for 3 years plus now and is equally if not more passionate, about our vision and philosophy. He will continue to consult with me, but will be completely independent in the day to day running of the company. We are working on some very interesting developments for the growth of the company and I am more focused on that since the last 6 months and will be at least for the next one year.
2) FWM will complete 5 years in January 2012. It’s amazing how time has flown.
3) David is not in charge of FWM India sales, nor of Fratelli sales. This is erroneous. He is simply a senior sales person in charge of Mumbai territory. Craig will continue to lead the all India sales team.

Best regards,
Dharti Desai | Founder & CEO
