Parker to Rate Spanish Wines on Site

Wine Advocate, the prestigious publication created and owned by the famous US wine critic Robert Parker will start rating many of the Spanish wines in several of its appellations with his taster Jay Miller planning to visit Spain twice this year to rate around 30 wineries from Rioja, Ribera, Toro and yet undecided appellation.

Jay will visit over 30 wineries according to reports. Robert Parker has asked for the assistance of The Wine Academy, an associate of the Indian Wine Academy, to co-ordinate the programme for Miller’s trips to Spain, as well as arranging the delivery samples and organizing the winery visits.

This collaboration has its roots in the world wine summit, Winefuture – Rioja ’09 held in Rioja last November, where Parker was a keynote speaker and announced that The Wine Advocate would come to Spain in order to score many of its wines. Pancho Campo MW the founder of the Wine Academy had discussed with him the possibility.

Jay Miller’s first trip to Spain will take place during the last week of April and the first week in May. During this time, he will visit the regions of Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Toro accompanied by Pancho Campo MW. He will taste the most recent vintage to be released in the market and will visit twenty wineries. This decision by Parker gives Spain the importance of other regions such as Bordeaux, California and the Rhône, which have received Parker and his team in order to carry out “in situ” tastings.

Jay Miller will return to Spain for the second visit in September when  he will taste the wines of other Spanish appellations to be finalized by The Wine Advocate at a later date.

Miller has been rating wines since 1985 as Parker’s part time assistant and a consultant. He currently covers the wines of Oregon, Washington, Spain, Australia, South America, Greece and Vintage Ports

Thanks for the comments. Technically you are right-it is not Robert Parker who is not rating the wines- but so are hundreds of wine in several coutries where Parker has never been there-for isntance India-and it is still known as Parker's Rating. We did mention right in the beginning of the article about Wine Advocate doing the rating- Parker does get erroneously linked with Advocate-interchangeably. Not correct technically. Thanks for pointing out it is not Millr's first time in situ-that was the very reason for the article to be tehr in the first place. That was the impression we got from the Wine Academy which probably implied it was the first time the Academy was involved in this tasting . Regarding Greece, again our inference based on reports was that Miller does the tastings in Greece-perhaps not for Parker. It seems rather clear that in a majority of the countries where Parker does does not go himself or taste the wines directly, there are part time consultants who do it for him including Jay Miller. First of all the title of your article is misleading since it is Miller the one heading to Spain to rate the wines "in situ" and not Parker. Second, Miller has gone to Spain three times since he was appointed Wine Advocate's Spanish wine taster. He also has gone over to Spain previously when he was a retailer. Third, Miller is not Wine Advocate taster for the wines of Greece. That would be Mark Squires.
