New style guide by UK Supermarket Chain

Contrary to the common belief that the customers want to know the grape varietal or the country of origin, a customer research shows that the primary thought in the customers' mind is the style of the wine, making Sainsbury launch a style guide for their wines.

The UK supermarket chain known for its extensive range of wines and own labels is introducing new packaging for its labels and a colour coded style guide. The white wines are classified in three groups- crisp & delicate; soft & fruity; complex & elegant. The reds are similarly colour coded and categorised as light & elegant; smooth & mellow, rich and complex.

The chain hopes it would be able to encourage its clients to try something new and different with the new form of presentation.

The new look will incorporate the style guide on the front label and on the top of the capsule. The inventive approach is expected to broaden the knowledge of its customers.

The colour coding can be a novel concept for wines to be sold in restaurants and retail in India, helping the customers decide on which wines to buy. The Indian producers can also use some derivative of this approach to enable their customers to select wines, eventually resulting in an increase in their sales..

This is an excellent approach because, for the lay consumer, the " style " of the wine does seem to be paramount and, not knowing what to expect, discourages the average buyer. Grape varietals are generally a mystery to such wine drinkers, and ,in India, they are still in the majority. This type of information will at least encourage experimentation.
