The central government actually proposed to bring back
hotels and hospitality establishments under the Factories Act 1948 by
nullifying the amendment made to the Act in 1976 to exclude such establishments
from the act's ambit.
The hotel industry associations from the very beginning
took up cudgels against the move to re-enact the act to bring hospitality
establishments under the Factories Act, once again. "We acted immediately
when reports about the proposed move appeared in the national media in
December last year. We approached the Labour Secretary and the Tourism
Secretary and drew their attention to our reservations on the move to
amend the Act to bring hotel establishments back into the ambit of the
Factories Act," said an official of the Hotel Association of India
(HAI).
