'In response to the dramatic events in Mumbai, the threat of further terrorism in New Delhi and the consequent tension in the country and its inevitable repercussions on trade and social life in India in the immediate future, VeronaFiere has decided to postpone the Vinitaly World Tour stage dedicated to India initially scheduled in New Delhi 14-15 January 2009,' announces the Press Release from Veronafiere, organisers of Vinitaly India.
The Press Release however also clarifies that a new date will be announced as soon as possible in 2009.
Traditionally, Vinitaly India is part of the Vinitaly World Tour that also takes place in Miami and Palm Beach, USA, Russia, Japan and China.
Vinitaly has been the leading wine show in Italy and was started in 1967. It has grown and accompanied the development and success of the wine sector in Italy and other nations since, improving continually and adapting to market evolutions. The objective of the show according to promoters is to promote 'Made in Italy' and to support companies in their internationalisation process
In 2006, the event took its brand directly to India and Japan, emerging markets 'where Italian production is finding commercially interesting outlets and enormous potential for development.' The 2-day event was held in Mumbai and Delhi for a day each- a model it has followed during the three editions held so far.
In 2006, a history of sorts was created when about 54 Italian producers attended the show and various conferences. Many leading producers including Angelo Gaja, Antinori, Pio Cesare, Mastroberardino and Masi had personally visited India.
During the initial years, Vinitaly was represented in India at the IFOWS- a wine show debuting in 2003 and co-sponsored by Veronafiere. Started in 2006, Vinitaly India became an independent show, coinciding the Delhi leg of the event with the opening day of IFOWS in Delhi, which is being held at Hotel Lalit on January 15-17 this year, as scheduled originally.
Another important food and wine show, IFE-India 2008 was also held as scheduled in Delhi on December 2-4, although a few exhibitors did cancel out, due to security apprehensions. |
