Figures from conveniently useable online software called TastingBuddy eCatalogue compiled searches from 5,000 trade members and discovered a trend for lower-alcohol variants for wines.
About 35 per cent of searches were for wines under 12% alc. while 64 per cent of searches were for wines with less than 13% level.
Indian Wine Academy and DelWine have been propagating the production of low alcohol wines, suggesting a red flag up for wines with over 13.5% alc., at least for frequent consumption.
Despite the high scores given to the big wines with over ripe grapes and high alcohol and with rising temperatures increasing the potential alcohol in the grape sugar, a section of wine drinking public is globally clamouring for lower alcohol wines –and their number is increasing. These figures reveal the current trend in the market, though presently wines with 13% alcohol are produced much less than 64 percent searched.
Red more dominant
Searches by colour showed a strong bias towards red, compared to their respective current market share.
Red wine was dominant, with 60 per cent of searches, while white wines accounted for 32 per cent and rosé, 8 per cent respectively.
Tasting Buddy searches are like wish list of wine consumers. For instance, statistics indicate consumption of red wine at 44 per cent , whereas the searches touched 60 per cent.
Vive La France
Similarly the Data from 6,000 searches recorded by more than 5,000 unique users indicated that France was the most searched country at the Fair beating the likes of Chile, New Zealand and Argentina.
Perhaps this was due to the fact that it had a strong presence at the Show this year. Sopexa had organised the 'Fast Track to France' stand, which showcased a collection of AOC wines selected by a blind tasting panel.
Italy was the second most searched for country, followed by Spain, Australia and Argentina.
About half (49%) the user profile hailed from the UK while 38% came from Europe. The remainder was split between the Americas (8%), Asia Pacific (4%) and the Middle East and Africa (1%).
Burgundy was the most searched region followed by Champagne and Bordeaux respectively.
Sauvignon Blanc was the most popular grape. Following grapes were searched in chronological order.
1 Sauvignon Blanc
2 Pinot Noir
3 Cabernet Sauvignon
4 Chardonnay
5 Shiraz
6 Tempranillo
