The 13th annual International Wine and Spirits Research report released last week, found that USA which had first become the biggest wine consumer in 2011, edging past Italy and France with 311.3 million cases, has clocked 339.6 million cases in 2014. It thus registered a total growth of about 28 million cases (9 liters) in 3 years, much less than the projected 10% annual growth. However, it continues to maintain the top consuming nation status.
Italy continues to be the country with top per capita consumption at 48.1 liters, ahead of France. However, it is expected to drop to second place by 2018 due to the current trend of decreasing wine consumption which will come down by 5-6% in 4 years.
In the report, commissioned by wine trade show Vinexpo, analysts found that Italy is expected to fall from the current third spot- behind the USA and France in the consumption by volume, behind Germany which is in the 4th spot now.
Announcing the new concept of emphasizing a single country and making it a partner country, USA has been selected as the inaugural special guest because of its number 1 wine consumer status in the world. As a partner country, the exhibitors from the US will be located in the centre of the fair’s main space, Hall 1. A special tasting of US wines will be organized. There will also be a marketing conference on ‘Mastering Business in the USA’ on 16 June.
