Australian Bushfires Devastating

The Australian wine industry is still counting the casualties of bushfires which ravaged South East Australia last weekend. Several vineyards, wineries and lives have been lost in Victoria, with the Yarra Valley especially hard hit, according to multitude of reports.

Unprecedented 48 degree temperatures and searing winds last Saturday had sparked wild fires that have left 181 persons dead across Australia's south-eastern state of Victoria, according to the latest  figures this morning  in Melbourne.  More bodies are expected to be found under the debris. Damage to agriculture and infrastructure could lead to insurance claims of over A$500 million, according to reports.

It has so far been revealed that Roundstone winery and restaurant in Yarra Glen has been completely destroyed, as has Rupert's Ridge in Heathcote. Domaine Chandon is thought to have lost several rows of vines, while the fires destroyed about 40 hectares of vineyard belonging to Foster's; Lance Family Vineyards and Punt Road were partially damaged. According to the Australian, around 330,000 hectares have been burnt by the fires.

Though the fires seem to have been caused by the heat wave, arson cannot be ruled out. In fact, at least one case of arson has been already booked, according to the Police Commissioner of Victoria. Two persons were also arrested this morning on reports of suspicious movements in the north of Victoria.

Reports from other regions:

There have been reports of lower harvests from other areas-besides Yarra Valley. Decanter reports the following figures:

Yarra Valley: 50% less than average
Barossa Valley: 20%-30% less than average
Clare: average
Coonawarra: 40%-50% less than average
Hunter Valley: less than 10% lower
Margaret River: below average
Tasmania: 20% less than average

DelWine would like to express sincere sympathies with the vintners and other citizens of Victoria and surrounding areas for the loss of life and property and sends them good wishes and a come back to normalcy as much and as soon as possible-editor

Thankyou for your kind words and thoughts.  Being from Victoria myself the locations affected are all very familiar to me so hard to grasp.  We grow up familiar with bush fire threats in summer and there have been a number over the years, but nothing like these and the loss of life has shocked all of us.

Ferguson Estate is in one of the affected area's though not where most lives were lost.  We will try to check and let you know, but with much still in chaos it is difficult to get specific information.  The website for Fergusson states that they are open for business and were not affected by the bushfires so perhaps they were fortunate to have had the flames by-pass them.

thankyou again for your thoughts.Regards.Peter
