Unprecedented 48 degree temperatures and searing winds last Saturday had sparked wild fires that have left 181 persons dead across Australia's south-eastern state of Victoria, according to the latest figures this morning in Melbourne. More bodies are expected to be found under the debris. Damage to agriculture and infrastructure could lead to insurance claims of over A$500 million, according to reports.
It has so far been revealed that Roundstone winery and restaurant in Yarra Glen has been completely destroyed, as has Rupert's Ridge in Heathcote. Domaine Chandon is thought to have lost several rows of vines, while the fires destroyed about 40 hectares of vineyard belonging to Foster's; Lance Family Vineyards and Punt Road were partially damaged. According to the Australian, around 330,000 hectares have been burnt by the fires.
Though the fires seem to have been caused by the heat wave, arson cannot be ruled out. In fact, at least one case of arson has been already booked, according to the Police Commissioner of Victoria. Two persons were also arrested this morning on reports of suspicious movements in the north of Victoria.
