Scientific Forum on Alcohol Research

Boston University Medical School in the US has joined hands  with ‘Alcohol in Moderation’ in the UK to establish  the International Scientific Forum on Alcohol Research,  with a group of scientists and medics who carry out research related to the health effects of alcohol, and includes specialists  in related health areas like epidemiology, cardiology, oncology, nutrition, alcohol abuse, public health, and neurology etc.

ISFAR will provide timely and unbiased assessments of emerging research related to the consumption of alcohol, putting new findings into perspective considering previous research.

There are too many reports in the recent times which seem to be motivate and finance by one side of the other. ISFAR will attempt to dispel erroneous and conflicting messages related to alcohol, messages that often confuse the public as well as other scientists and government officials.  The group is volunteering the services, and their critiques are being offered without charge to provide the public with a message regarding wine and other alcohol,l and health that is scientifically sound and balanced.

The forum will regularly distribute press releases with brief summaries about important emerging research related to alcohol and health.  These press releases will direct those interested in reading the full critique of the publication to the Forum web sites. These may be accessed at www.bu.edu/alcohol-forum.edu or www.alcoholforum4profs.org

ISFAR will also encourage Health Editors and wine journalists regarding emerging research on alcohol and health and will offer an independent opinion in context with other research on the subject.

ISFAR is a voluntary group of specialists, founded jointly by Professor R Curtis Ellison, Epidemiologist and Professor of Medicine and Public Health at Boston University School of Medicine and Helena Conibear, Director of Alcohol in Moderation (AIM). Professor Ellison has been involved in several pioneering studies in health and wine. He was with Prof Serge Renaud  on the 60 Minutes TV program in 1990 when the term ‘French Paradox’ was coined and it was inferred that red wine in moderation is good for heart.

AIM works internationally to disseminate accurate social, scientific and medical research concerning responsible and moderate drinking. contributed by a  Council of 20 Professors and Specialists through  www.alcoholinmoderation.com. The Council members provide their expertise free of any charges or gains. AIM maintains a  database of key research papers, summaries and peer reviewed articles on alcohol, health and associated social and policy issues and can be accessed free of cost.
