Olive Beach Turns French

Delhi’s well-known hip Mediterranean restaurant Olive Beach is turning French, though only for three days, with ‘The Festival de France’ to be celebrated in the form of a French Weekend – 10th to 12th July, reports Subhash Arora who visited the restaurant  Sunday to check out the planned action.

As you enter the restaurant, you are greeted by an attractive, big blue poster giving details of the event. What was the occasion, I wondered? AD Singh who is known for his creative ideas for all occasions says, ‘we have decided to have something special in the restaurant every month and to showcase one Mediterranean country around its National Day. Since 14th July is the French National Day, we decided to celebrate it with our French friends, a la Olive Beach.’

The Festival de France kicks off on Friday, the 10th July with a French cooking class with Chef Saby whose magic fingers and culinary prowess has impressed many a palate at the Olive Mehrauli, Olive Beach and the Ai restaurant in Saket. Styled simply as ‘Cooking corner’, it promises to teach you the delicious secrets to a Frenchman’s heart (and hopefully a French woman’s too!)

Aujourd 'hui c'est toi - Today it is you

This theme for the evening should entice the free-spirited Olivians for an evening of glitz and glam on the same day. The evening starts at 9’ o clock when a female DJ from France, Axailes Solar gets you in a mood to shake a leg. Helping you along would be some heady French cocktails, says Shailesh Jha, the Restaurant Manager.

When AD Singh is around, can fashion be far behind? An 'ooh la la' fashion interpretation by the Parisian award winning Fashion House Lacoanet Hemant, now in India should  pull in the fash fraternity.

Art & Wine Appreciation Class

Art and wine are on a high on Saturday morning, July 11, with an Art & Wine appreciation class for select women at 11 am- from the canvases of Matisse to the vineyards of Bordeaux and beyond. You would be able to join a Wine and Art Appreciation Class where you can say cheers to all things nice. Art impresario Aarti Singh, owner of the Polka Art Gallery and Subhash Arora, President of Indian Wine Academy & Editor of delWine, India’s first newsletter on food and wine circulated globally, will take you on a vintage tour of experience.

Wine 'n' dine

A specially prepared Menu for the multi-course sit-down dinner has been prepared,  with appropriately paired white and red French wines. Dinner will be laid out early at 8 pm on the evening of Saturday, for a limited number of people. Set at an all inclusive special price of Rs.2990, this is perhaps one of the most reasonable and affordable wine dinners in town. The food and variety may be plenty and the quality outstanding but the number of limited seats will disappoint many fence-sitters, unless they call on time at 9810877701 and make reservations.

You may wonder how the restaurant can afford such low prices. As A D Singh explains, ‘we work with many sponsors and well-wishers who help us out for such special events. In this case also several French sponsors have come forward’ Apparently, the similar event was also planned with Italians for their National Day last month but the event had to be cancelled due to some last minute unforeseen circumstances for the Italian sponsors.

Sunday Picnic on the Beach

Olive Beach has kept up the tradition of the Sunday Picnic basket with unlimited food and alcohol drinks that first became popular at the first Olive Restaurant in Delhi, opened at the One Style Mile, in Mehrauli a few years ago.

This Sunday it will be rolled out with Taittinger Champagne to wash down the popular French dishes. Priced at Rs.2990, it will be served at the usual timings of 12 noon till 3:30 pm.

Special French Menu

To top it all, the restaurant is organising a special French menu throughout the weekend, from 10-12 July. Special Crêperie (crêpe station), Fromagerie (cheese station), Boulangerie (bakery) and Patisserie will be set up to give you the option of nibbling your way through the entire stretch, or pick up some of these delicious tidbits to take home.
