Foodies Wines for Foodies

The wine label name game gets wackier with a popular US chain bringing out 'Foodies' label next month directed at the foodies with the label displaying the food the wine might match best with, and with supermarkets in India about to revolutionise wine retail, may offer a tip or two for their future branding strategy.

Launching nationally in stores in early March 2008 and created for food and wine enthusiasts of all levels, Cost Plus World Market brings out California Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon that will retail for $ 8, a price point which is slightly higher than the entry level.

The whacky wine labels feature illustrations that make it clear to the consumer which wine pairs best with what meat. A chicken on the Chardonnay, a pig on the Merlot and a cow on the Cabernet Sauvignon, with each label having a diagram of the different cuts of meat (obviously the vegetarians are not on their mind) suggest the food-wine match to its consumers.

The 2006 Foodies Chardonnay has elegant fruit forward flavours with a crisp finish making it a perfect choice to pair with roast chicken and garlic mashed potatoes. The 2005 Foodies Merlot has balanced black fruit and ripe plum flavours with a dash of smoky spice that would go with a savoury slow-cooked pork roast or barbeque ribs. The Foodies 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon has rich black fruits enhanced by subtle hints of plum and mint, an ideal partner to deliciously rich filet mignon, says Julie Joy, a Senior National Wine Buyer at the World Market.

'Foodies was created to make food and wine pairing easy and affordable. It's a great everyday choice for food lovers everywhere,' she added.

'Experts now suggest breaking the old rules of pairing red wine with red meat and white wine with white meat and recommend pairing any wine with any dish. This can confuse most people. At Cost Plus World Market, we're in favour of the latter- of choosing a wine to suit your tastes. But sometimes the classic food and wine pairings work best and hence our label and the display style', she clarifies justifying the label.

Cost Plus World Market operates 299 stores in California and 33 other states in the US under the names "World Market" and "Cost Plus World Market." Besides an ever-changing selection of casual household goods, the stores sell over 500 international wines and gourmet foods imported from more than 50 countries, at affordable prices.
