Burgundy Exports Set for a Record

Following the foot steps of booming Champagne exports, Burgundy wines are also set to break their earlier record last year, with initial reports from their trade body BIVB indicating an increase of 25% in volume as compared with 2006.

According to BIVB, the Interprofession of Burgundy wines, the Burgundy exports crossed 95 million bottles in the first 10 months of 2007 with a sale of US$874m. It is optimistic that exports for the full year will cross 115m bottles, breaking the current 1998 export record of 104m bottles.

'There is still the effect of the movie - Sideways, pushing Pinot Noir sales,’ Alberic Bichot, partner of Albert Bichot another negociant and a Burgundy producer informed delWine last month during a visit to India. His company is one of the older Burgundy exporters to India. When we enquired from him the effect of a weakening dollar, he said at least 2007 had been a booming period.

The sentiments were also echoed by Bob DeRoose, COO and Director of Kobrand Corporation of USA, who are the owners of Louis Jadot, during his visit to Delhi last week for promotion of Cakebread Cellars wines. ‘We have had excellent vintages of 2005 and 2006 and have been working hard to increase our export market share’, he said.

There is a general agreement that the excellent vintage of 2005 followed by another good vintage in 2006, the feel-good factor has spilled over to Burgundy, as well.

Burgundy has been increasing its overall export share which has currently gone up to 50% of its total production.
