Shade of Bordeaux in Maharashtra

When Chateau d'Ori, a new winery in Nashik recently launched five labels of domestic wine, one could see shades of Bordeaux in the taste and style. Finished in Bordeaux bottles, the wines reflect that not only is the chateau's name derived from Bordeaux, but the taste, too, reports Wine Business International.

Ranjit Dhuru, the CEO founder of a large IT public limited company, Aftek Ltd., who is the majority shareholder at d'Ori, has been to Bordeaux many times during the last few years. Not only does he buy En Primeur from shippers there to collect fine Bordeaux wines like Mouton, Angelus and Cheval Blanc, he also started importing eight labels from Bordeaux 4 years ago and is currently selling 5,000 cases annually, including Carillon, Jupille Carillon, Laffite Laujac and Pontac Monplaisir under the Chateau d'Ori labels in Maharashtra.

The style of his own wine is set by the renowned oenologist from Bordeaux, Athanase Fakorellis. A protégé of Michel Rolland, Fakorellis has been visiting Dindori, where the estate is located, for the last four years. He also designed the modern winery with its efficient, concentric tanks, a first of its kind in the region.

Ranjit abhors screw caps and insists on using cork, in a typical Bordeaux fashion. Even the labels, thought by many to be the best wine labels in the domestic market today, were designed by the Spanish artist Cristina Alba who lives in Bordeaux.

Available in Maharashtra for between Rs. 380 ($ 9.5) and Rs.650 ($ 16 , he hopes that they will one day be available in France, too, when the vines are older and wines reach even higher quality standards.

While Ajay has a valid point, it is no hidden fact that we are about 15 degrees higher in temperature than Bordeaux and a similar number in latitude closer to the equator. by standard units of measurement for every 1000 metres gained in height , the air cools by 1 degree celsius . give this fact , it may not be possible to make wines with SIMILAR alcohol or acid levels without using techniques like reverse osmosis, acid addition and the like. The styling of a wine may be like bordeaux and can be obtained even by FRENCH OAK (assuming them to be barrels as opposed to chips or staves) but what remains to be seen is whether the quality levels are maintained in the future ( if stricter regulation like france) was to be brought in.

I definitely appreciate the effort of Mr Dhuru but i think if he tried to develop something which speaks of indian Terrior may help Indian wine industry. Because we want to be known a Nation of Indian wines and not bordeaux wines. It's always great to to learn from others but then we need to develop our own identity and believe in it. All the best for the good work.
