Sarkozy Visit to bring Bordeaux closer

A series of pacts signed to enhance the science and technology co-operation between India and France during the recent visit of French President Nicolas Sarkozy also included the wine sector.

The Bordeaux region has agreed to share its experience in the wine sector with their Indian counterparts, a development that is expected to benefit the grape growers in India and increase French influence in Indian wine making.

The University of Bordeaux and the University of Pune in Maharashtra are planning a joint programme on wine studies covering activities in information technology and software, and wine processing. Pune is the largest wine producing region in India, producing more wine than the well-known Nashik region.

"We're looking forward to joint research and exchange of students and faculty," said Professor Singaravelou, vice-president of the University of Bordeaux.

Presidents and directors of several French research institutes and universities, who accompanied Sarkozy, held intense discussions with their Indian counterparts on joint research and student exchange programmes.

President Sarkozy was on a state visit a week ago and was the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations on January 26, marking 58 years of India becoming a Republic. The Head of a State from a friendly nation is invited as the chief guest.
