Mittal Spent US$1.5m on Mouton at US$60m Wedding

UK-based Indian steel magnate, Laxmi Mittal, who was in the news for his Arcelor takeover bid, has made it to yet another billionaire club of Forbes business magazine -- this time for hosting the most extravagant wedding affair of the century, reports Press Trust of India.

Mittal outscored billionaires Donald Trump, Bernard Arnault of LVMH and Andrei Melnichenko of Russia with his daughter Vanisha's US$60-million June 2004 wedding extravagaza in Paris.

The Mittal family, Forbes said in a report titled Billionaire Weddings, had sent out 20-page invitations in ornate silver boxes and 1,000 guests were put up in a five-star hotel for the five-day affair. One party was hosted at Versailles while another event took place in a wooden castle temporarily erected at Parc de Saint-Cloud.

Pop singer Kylie Minogue performed and the guests emptied 5,000 bottles of Mouton-Rothschild 1990, with the wine tab estimated to be US$1.5 million.

(Editor's Note: One of the guest, Indian business tycoon Vivek Burman was later heard lamenting how India's richie rich made a beeline for Dom Perignon vintage rose, ignoring the great wine. He exclaimed at one of Delhi's XO evenings: "If only they knew how much each drop cost!")
