Export of Italian wine to the USA has seen a jump of 7.6% compared to last year, based on the analysis of data released by the Italian Food and Wine Institute for the first nine months, reports www.coldiretti.com. Catapulted in part by the Italian world cup victory this summer, the export is expected to reach one billion dollars for the whole year.
The data also revealed that Italian production confirmed its leadership because of its refusal to use wood chips in winemaking, a practice which is allowed to Australians. According to the National Brand Index by Simon Anholt, it has achieved third place in the international market because of its excellent cuisine, landscapes, and the capacity of its wine to express the country's essence.
Italian wine counts for almost one third (31%) of all wine imported in the USA , followed closely by Australia (30%), which is selling at very low prices. France (14%), after years of difficult times has seen a change in its fortunes and has actually registered the highest increase in value (+29%) and has even surpassed Australia in value, adds the report .
Wine has become one of the biggest ambassador of Brand Italy, according to a survey conducted by Piepoli Institute, commissioned in part by Italian Trade Commission, the foreigners think more of wine (45%) than places (20%), apparel(19%) and soccer (15%) when they think of Italy .
Italy recorded total revenue of € 9 billion, a third of which was earned in exports, with almost one third of production being of DOC and DOCG wines.
