Hardy Wine Company yesterday launched 'Shuttle', a single-serve plastic wine bottle sealed by an upturned plastic cup which is twisted off to drink the contents.
It looks simple but Hardy, one of Australia 's biggest wine companies claims it could revolutionise the way we drink wine.
Hardy believes the packaging technique is first in the world and is aimed at getting drinks out fast at events when big crowds need to be served quickly.
Global marketing manager Miriam Leenders said the company had used the current Australian tour of circus group Cirque de Soleil to test the 187ml combo. Wine sales had increased more than 160 per cent compared with the group's previous tour and people were served quickly. It also reduced breakages.
Ms Leenders said the idea was simple but had been technically complex to execute. The challenges included ensuring the closure was very tight to prevent leaks and oxidation of the wine, getting the cup to twist off on line, developing a new production line to put the cup on the bottle and finding an additive to put in the plastic to give the bottle a shelf life of 12 months or almost double existing small PET bottles.
Hardy is imported by Sula in India .
