"Australia is not flying as it used to," Alessandro Marchesan, wine buyer and sommelier at super-hip Japanese restaurant Zuma in London's tony Knightsbridge neighbourhood, told Decanter's newly launch trade newsletter.
"There are too many small wineries that describe themselves as boutique and unique, but at the end of the day produce overpriced boring rubbish. This is scaring the customers," Marchesan said. Riesling is coming back; aged viognier is also popular; California is a big trend, as is Sicily.
He said he would bet his top dollar on Waipara in New Zealand for its "beautiful Chardonnays and Pinots. And Sicily - it's up and coming." Any views?
