A unique bottle of 1966 Dom Perignon, signed by the surviving members of the England football squad of 1966, is to be sold at Sotheby's next month. The profit from the sale will go to Cancer Research UK in memory of the team's legendary captain, Bobby Moore, who died from bowel cancer in 1993, according to www.bbr.com, the website of the London merchant, Berry Bros & Rudd.
The bottle has come directly from the Moet & Chandon cellars in Epernay. 1966 was one of the best vintages ever for Dom Perignon, besides being English football's finest hour. Serena Sutcliffe, Master of Wine and Head of Sotheby's Wine Department, says: "This is an extremely exciting moment, both for lovers of wine and for lovers of football; in fact, for anyone who takes pride in the memory of England's momentous victory of 1966."
With the 40th anniversary of the famous victory, coinciding with the finals in Germany this summer, there is bound to be great interest in this bottle. The estimate for the bottle is £5,000-£8,000. "This is a bottle to enjoy, and a bottle to drink in celebration, but it is also a bottle with which to remember," says Stephen Mould, Senior Director of Sotheby's Wine Department. |
