If you thought the best wine came all the way from France and cost the earth, think again.
The city of Nashik in Maharashtra hosted its very own wine festival over the weekend. On display were bottles of red, white and rose wine, all made in Nashik itself. Behind each of these stalls were the men who make these wines, reports the Web site of the television channel, NDTV.
"We've tried to give a platform to farmers who work on their own vineyards but have problems marketing their wines," said Rajesh Jadhav, the festival organiser. "The wine made here is very good and Indian wines are ready to compete with other wines now," said Ashok Gaekwad, Director, ND Wines.
An initiative of the Nashik Valley Grape Wine Producers Association, the festival was the first event of its kind where the industry showcased itself under the Nashik Valley banner. The festival included fashion shows and dance performances.
"The exhibition will go to other cities from Nashik," said a media release issued by the organizers. "Nashik has established its identity as the wine capital because it is the only city in the country with the maximum number of wineries - 23 out of 43 in the country."
