Importing wine into India has been rated among the “12 best new business opportunities in the world” by Business 2.0 magazine, which is a part of the global media giant CNN-Time Warner Group. The other big opportunity for India, according to Business 2.0, is the creation of an advertising network for the country’s mobile content developers.

But, needing an initial investment of US$100,000 to US$500,000, the idea of creating an ad network for the mobile content market may seem risky in comparison with the wine import business, which can be started for less than US$100,000.

India, the magazine notes, has already transformed into a major destination for wine from the United States, Australia and other wine-producing countries, and the process has been facilitated by the scaling down of import and excise duties in the past two years. Imports will also bypass the domestic brands because India is too hot for serious viticulture. One also does not need an import licence, which means anyone can bring wine from abroad into a warehouse bonded by India’s customs authorities.

The other “big new opportunities” mentioned by Business 2.0 include remodelling homes for China’s burgeoning middle class, flipping mining claims in Bolivia, exporting the planet's next great wines – from Greece and trading in gourmet coffee from Rwanda.
