Over a thousand lots of Penfolds wines dating back to the early 1950s are up for auction on the Net, reports Decanter.com. Australian wine auctioneers Langton's are holding the sale, which began on August 7 and closes August 21.
The Classic Penfolds Auction is offering 1,130 lots online, mainly of single bottles. The offerings include every vintage of Grange from the experimental 1951 to 2001, and large format bottles from all Penfolds ranges.
Last year, a bottle of the 1951 vintage of what was then called Grange Hermitage went for just over A$42,000. Only 160 cases were made and the wine was never sold commercially. The current bid for this year's 1951 bottle is £10,000 (estimate is
£14,000-17,600).
