Egg Consumption To More Than Triple in India by 2020

Research and Markets has announced the addition of Vision for Indian Poultry Industry: Current Scenario and Future Prospects to their offering, according to a release issued by Businesswire from Dublin.

The fifth largest producer of eggs and ninth largest producer of poultry meat (chicken) in the world, India's production in 2004  was over 34 billion eggs and about 600,000 tonnes of poultry meat. In the broader market for poultry products, India was positioned 17th in World Poultry Production. Analysts estimate that the poultry sector in India has been growing at a much faster rate, along with other industries, like BPO companies and securities market. Over the past decade, the poultry industry in India has contributed approximately US$229million to the Gross National Product (GNP). Several breakthroughs in poultry science and technology have led to the development of genetically superior breeds capable of higher production, even under adverse climatic conditions, offering opportunities for overseas entrepreneurs to expand export and import of poultry products on a larger scale.

The average per capita poultry meat consumption is also estimated to have increased from 0.69 to 1.28 kilos during the 2000-2004. The consumption of eggs will increase from 34 billion in 2000 to 106 billion in 2020; poultry meat consumption is predicted to increase from 687 million kilos to 1,674 million kilos. The market research report predicts a relatively strong growth for the egg and poultry meat industry in both the urban and rural areas in the next two decades. It has found that egg consumption has grown at a much faster pace than the consumption of poultry meat. With the continual rise in incomes, it is estimated to more than triple by 2020.

The report also examines the consumption pattern of egg and poultry meat for 2010 by taking into account urbanisation and differences in consumption patterns across various income groups, both in urban and in rural areas. The report deals in detail with the market structure and highlights the production, consumption and import/export statistics relating to the country's poultry market, including broilers and processed poultry.
